In a conversation with reporters, Meritorious Artist Thanh Loc admitted that he was once very disappointed, even shocked when his role in the movie "Ma da" was cut many important segments after editing.
The male artist said that what makes him sad is not whether he appears more or less on screen, but the feeling that the effort and emotions for the character are no longer kept as complete as before.
According to Thanh Loc, many viewers often think artists regret being reduced in "screen time", but for him, the duration is not a decisive factor in the value of a role. The male artist believes that if the script is good enough, the character appearing in a few segments can still leave an impression. What he regrets the most is that the psychological alignment of the character is changed after the film is completed.
The male artist recounted that during his participation in "Ma da", he seriously invested in the role, despite the fact that his knee was seriously injured at that time. There were scenes of fighting and scuffling that had to be filmed many times, but he still tried to complete it because he believed that everything was necessary for the character's story.
However, when watching the final edit, Thanh Loc was "startled" because many important psychological parts were cut. According to him, this makes the character much fainter. The male artist even wondered if the role only remained as in the movie, then "anyone could act", it is not necessary to invite him to participate.
Thanh Loc said that despite working in the profession for many years, artists still find it difficult to get used to the feeling of being cut scenes because each role is time, effort and real emotions. He believes that film actors suffer many disadvantages because they do not have the final decision-making power over their work. After the filming process, the work is also affected by the editing rhythm, duration, commercial factors or the number of theatrical screenings.
The male artist also shared that cinema is different from theater in that actors cannot control the work until the last minute. If on stage, the audience will fully receive the performance of the artist, then in cinema, there are roles that are heavily invested but when released in theaters, they only have a few minutes to appear.
However, Thanh Loc said he accepts this as part of his profession. According to the male artist, cinema is a collective labor and no one can ask the whole film to only serve their character. After such experiences, what he keeps is not frustration but experience to consider more carefully when accepting roles, and at the same time understand that art sometimes has unfinished things just like life.
