Associate Professor Nguyen Lan Cuong passes away

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Lan Cuong - archaeologist who set a record as "the person who researched the most ancient Vietnamese remains" - passed away at noon on September 6 in Hanoi, at the age of 84.

Speaking to Lao Dong reporter, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Lan Trung - Mr. Nguyen Lan Cuong's younger brother - said that Mr. Nguyen Lan Cuong breathed his last at noon on September 6 at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, after a period of struggling with stomach cancer.

Currently, the remains of Mr. Nguyen Lan Cuong have been brought to the National Funeral Home, No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong. The visitation ceremony for the late Associate Professor, Doctor, and musician will take place at 1:30 p.m. on May 8.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Lan Cuong was born in 1941, the 5th child of People's Artist, Professor Nguyen Lan. His brothers and sisters are experts in many different fields such as Prof. Dr. People's Artist Nguyen Lan Dung (biology), Prof. Dr. People's Artist Nguyen Lan Hung (agriculture), Prof. Dr. Kon, musician Nguyen Lan Tuat (music)...

Mr. Nguyen Lan Cuong graduated from Hanoi University of Science and Technology, majoring in Biology, and was a trainee at the Academy of the German Democratic Republic (1978-1980 and the Academy of the Soviet Union (1988-1990). He then received his PhD in 1994 and his Associate Professor in 2002. He was a Senior researcher of the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology from 2003 and retired in 2007.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Lan Cuong is considered the founder of modern antiquities in Vietnam. He used to hold the position of General Secretary of the Vietnam Archaeology Association.

During his lifetime, Mr. Nguyen Lan Cuong devoted his entire life to researching the origin of people in Vietnam.

He has researched and processed more than 1,000 sets of ancient remains, which were confirmed by the Vietnam Record Organization as the person who conducted the most research on ancient remains in Vietnam - up to 1,093 individuals.

The name of Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Lan Cuong is associated with many major archaeological works such as: Characteristics of the people of Dong Son culture in Vietnam; Research on the characteristics of the shape, race and diseases of ancient people's teeth in the metal age in Northern Vietnam; Research on the remains at Hoa Diem (Khanh Hoa), the site of Vuon Chuoi (Hanoi)...

In addition, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Lan Cuong is also a talented musician, having held the position of Permanent Vice President of the Hanoi Music Association, Head of the Inspection Committee of the Hanoi Literature and Arts Association, Commander of the Hanoi Harmony harmony harmony, contributing to bringing harmony art closer to the public of the capital.
