“Dear Hyeri” is a healing romance drama revolving around Joo Eun Ho (Shin Hye Sun), an announcer who suffers from dissociative identity disorder after her sister goes missing and breaks up with her longtime boyfriend Hyun Oh (Lee Jin Wook).
Taking on the dual roles of Joo Eun Ho - a veteran announcer and Joo Hye Ri - a parking attendant, Shin Hye Sun said that as soon as she read the script, she thought she had to act in this film.
“Although it may sound cheesy, the first time I was happiest was when I read the script for ‘Dear Hyeri’. I felt like I was a combination of Eun Ho and Hye Ri. Sometimes I don’t even realize when I’m happy, and other times, I find joy in the smallest things.
This film reminded me once again that “true happiness comes from within”. From the first moment I received the script to every moment of filming, I was happy. I hope that those who watch the film can also find their own happiness,” she said.
Talking about having to take on two different roles, the actress expressed: “I wanted Eun Ho to appear both passionate and dull, while Hye Ri had to appear both dull and passionate. To highlight the contrast between the two, I focused on their appearance from hair, makeup, costumes, and even their tone of voice and way of speaking.
To prepare for my role as a broadcaster, I got a lot of help from a professional broadcaster. Speaking like a broadcaster is harder than I thought. So I practiced by listening to their recordings and repeating them and practicing as instructed.”
Regarding the contrasting love stories in the film, with Eun Ho - Hyun Oh (a couple who broke up after a long-term relationship) and Hye Ri - Joo Yeon (first love), the actress said that there will be many interesting differences between the two couples in terms of approach as well as feelings when meeting.
In this healing drama, there is a line that Shin Hye Sun really loves: “I hate Hyun Oh because I can’t have him. Do you know how much you have to hate something you want so much to give it up? That’s why I hate Hyun Oh so much.
This line really conveys Eun Ho's deep love for Hyun Oh. As the person who plays Eun Ho, this line helps me understand all the emotions of the character."
