After 2 years of absence from the big screen, he returned to the villainous role in the horror film ut Lan: Oan Linh Duong. The silent atmosphere over the past time is due to the lack of suitable invitations, or is it because he has become more meticulous in choosing scripts?
- When I return, what I want most is to be able to find a character with a new color, different from my image in 10 years of work. At first, I did not plan to stop acting for 2 years, but I kept waiting for a good role, and after 2 years I rarely appeared on screen.
During that time, I was also sad, seeing my colleagues filming made me feel a little sad. Recently, I have participated in several game shows to keep my passion for the profession, acting in a segment in films of directors close to me.
The two-year hiatus from filming can make the audience forgetful, affect their performance, and also reduce their income. Have you ever envisioned those things?
- For many years, I have been filming work, filming from morning to night, and filming entertainment shows so dense that I usually go home late at night. I just follow the schedule to receive films, film, and go to shows. When I realized, there were scenes I acted unlucky and were "blized". If I keep letting it go, sooner or later, the audience will find my face bored. From there, I decided to only accept new game shows and different, special roles.
Surely when I work less, my income will also decrease. When I "work" day and night, I can cover my family more fully. Now, I am still renting a house, not up to the surplus level. But when I confide in my wife, she understands and always accompanies me.
Some opinions say that Mac Van Khoa's special appearance is both an advantage and a disadvantage. What is your point of view?
- Since I was a child, I have been self-conscious about my appearance, because I am always the ugliest man in my group of friends. But since I had the opportunity to act in grade 8, I began to love acting and drama. I started to be more open, participated in plays at school, in communes and thanks to that, I was no longer self-conscious.
Going through the journey from the difficult days of acting to becoming a famous person, what role does the family play in his career?
- Actually, I am also an introvert, rarely communicate or hang out with friends. When I was young, my parents were afraid that I would be shy. When I practice drama and am happier, my parents are very happy and often come see me perform. However, when I took the entrance exam to Hanoi University of Theatre and Cinema, I failed from the first round. That was a big shock to me, making me realize that acting was very difficult, my appearance was very picky and my acting experience was nothing. My parents are also sad, because all my friends are in college or vocational training. That summer, I was also frustrated and asked to work at a leather shoe company near my home. Next year, I took the re-examination and studied Stage Director in Nha Trang.
Then after 3 years of studying, I was shocked again because I was holding a degree in my hand and didn't know what to do. I went to the South to seek opportunities and experienced my first jobs. Right when I was planning to leave to go abroad to work, luck smiled on me. I won the 2015 laughing Across Vietnam contest and started to become known. During that time, I was always grateful to my parents for always supporting and encouraging me not to give up, even though the cost of schooling was very expensive.
At the age of over 30, Mac Van Khoa has a warm family with his wife and daughter. 2015's smiling Across Vietnam was also a chance for him to meet his wife. How can you tell me about your wife's companionship?
- She was the first audience member to ask to take a photo with me. After a period of getting to know each other, she became my wife (laughs). During their dating period until giving birth, my wife always worked with me and took care of me. I am also always clear at work, never letting my wife feel sad about interacting with a female co-star. My wife and I both believe that loyalty is the most important thing, in love and in marriage.
For many years, my wife has always followed my roles, gave comments and encouraged me. She was also a great motivation for me to accept the role of a villain in ut Lan: Oan Linh Duong.
Thank you Mac Van Khoa for the conversation!
