The outlook for the performance industry

Huyền Chi |

In 2024, the performing arts industry in Vietnam witnessed an unprecedented event when domestic music nights of "big brothers" continuously sold out, crashed the system, and attracted tens of thousands of audiences.

The performing arts industry is growing.

At the end of 2024, "Call Me by Fire" and "Anh trai say hi" will bring 6 large-scale performances, each attracting thousands of audiences. The numbers "tickets sold out in 40 minutes", "150,000 people waiting in line to buy tickets", "tickets resold for 5 times the original price"... show that audiences are hunting for tickets to see the "brothers".

The show business once dreamed of that prospect when BlackPink performed two nights at My Dinh National Stadium and recorded 62,000 spectators in July 2023. Just over a year later, Vietnamese audiences are almost "racing" in the ticket fever of domestic singers.

The heat of the two concerts from the two most popular TV shows of the past year has completely changed the performance industry market, which is "foreign-oriented", and loves and is greatly influenced by KPop.

It is hard to find anywhere else a performance that can make Southerners hum the cheo tune in "Dao lieu", Northerners sing "Da co hoai lang", and people from all regions sing "Mua tren pho Hue". From children to adults, they can join in the melodies that have been with us for a long time such as: "Chiec khan pieu", "Mother loves child"... "Call Me by Fire" has succeeded in its mission of connecting and spreading cultural beauty.

In "Anh trai say hi", we can see the convergence and updating of Vietnamese music trends. Rarely does an entertainment program use all newly composed songs but they continuously dominate digital music charts. 30 "brothers" at a young age represent a generation of modern young singers, capable of changing the music trends of young people.

The packed shows, even two of which took place on the same day, were the sweet fruit of the 63 "brothers" and producers who have persistently renewed songs, staged stages, and created entertainment content to conquer domestic audiences.

Not only with a series of large-scale concerts, "Call Me by Fire" and "Anh trai say hi" which just debuted in the first season have now become a popular entertainment brand, with a large audience and persistent support. From concerts to merchandise, the two shows will release a documentary in theaters in 2025, continuing to extend the unprecedented series of achievements in the history of Vietnamese showbiz.

Commercialized entertainment products have created a new face for the domestic performance industry. For the first time, the business of entertainment branded items has been responded to by audiences, who are willing to spend money like this year.

Market expansion in 2025

The records will not stop in 2024 because in 2025, the 2 "brother" shows will continue to organize more shows to serve the audience. The potential of the performance industry is huge, especially when music reality shows have explored the market, created great social effects, and expanded their influence to a large audience of many ages.

The singers from these two famous shows have also become popular. When they organize shows, meet-and-greet sessions, and private events, they also make the audience "fight" for tickets.

In just the last 3 months of the year, Hanoi had about 30 big and small shows, while Ho Chi Minh City also recorded more than 40 music events by "big brothers" and "talents" to meet the great demand of the audience.

From a media phenomenon, the programs have "reversed" the tastes of audiences, especially young people, in consuming and interacting with entertainment products. Audiences are demanding more from an entertainment product, not just stopping at the quality of music, but also craving a comprehensive story - from the message, the appeal of each individual artist, to the benefits they receive when spending a large amount of money.

Taking advantage of this opportunity, many corporations and businesses have also joined the bustling event organization playground. Events sponsored and co-organized by large enterprises have reached international standards, with quality not inferior to grand concerts in the region and around the world. Professional performances will contribute to enhancing the position of the domestic entertainment industry, promoting the development of many other economic sectors, and at the same time enhancing the public's cultural enjoyment.

Sharing with Lao Dong Newspaper reporter, Mr. Le Huu Dung - Director of BnD Media Company, founder of the brand "River Flows In You" - commented that the development of the performing arts industry is a common trend, when young people have better economic conditions, their requirements in consuming music products are also higher. That is the reason why reality shows about music are popular, creating the premise for the development of the performing arts industry. From there, artists can reach the public, and large businesses and corporations are also more interested in this field.

"Reality TV shows are increasingly updated with music trends, with diverse genres. Many genres of music such as Hip Hop and Rap are becoming popular, or songs that have stood the test of time once again delight music lovers. The music market is increasingly diverse, and the audience's perception of music is also improving. Audiences are increasingly demanding in terms of sound quality, lighting, and stage design. When audiences spend large sums of money to enjoy worthy artistic values, the economy and tourism will also develop accordingly," commented Mr. Le Huu Dung.
