Duong Nham stone carving craft village in Pham Thai ward and Ha Trang silk weaving craft village in Thang Long commune, Kinh Mon town, Hai Duong province have just had their craft village titles revoked by the Hai Duong Provincial People's Committee.
This recall is because the above craft villages do not meet the criteria specified in Decree 52/2018/ND-CP of the Government, issued on April 12, 2018.
Mr. Pham Van Dau - Chairman of Pham Thai Ward People's Committee said that currently, in Duong Nham stone carving village, there are only 2 out of 970 households in the area still maintaining stone carving activities. Most of the other households have switched to other occupations.
This does not meet the minimum criteria for the number of households practicing the craft (requiring at least 20% of the total number of households in the area participating in the craft to be eligible for recognition as a craft village).
Meanwhile, in Ha Trang silk weaving village, according to Mr. Nguyen Duc Dong - Chairman of Thang Long Commune People's Committee, there used to be hundreds of households engaged in silk weaving and mulberry growing, but now there are no households continuing to grow mulberry or maintain traditional silk weaving activities.
Ha Trang silk weaving village was recognized as a craft village by the People's Committee of Hai Duong province in 2004, and Duong Nham stone carving village was also recognized in 2008. However, due to occupational shifts and declining activities, both craft villages have lost their traditional production characteristics as before.
