Village devastated after flash flood in Dien Bien

Dien Bien - The historic flash flood that occurred in the early morning of August left at least 11 people dead and missing, leaving behind scene of mourning and devastation.

According to initial statistics, as of the night of August 1, the flood in Dien Bien province has killed at least 7 people, 3 people are still buried or swept away by floodwaters and 7 people are injured. Dozens of houses were completely buried or swept away by floods.

Present in Suoi Lu village, Xa Dung commune, Dien Bien province, one of the places that suffered heavy damage, scene of devastation, mud flooding houses, furniture floating everywhere.

While trying to clean up the rubble, Mr. Cao Van Cong (Suoi Lu village, Xa Dung commune) said: At around 5am on August 1, I heard the screams and ran to help my family near the stream evacuate. The flood rose quickly, and when I returned, the water in my house rose too high, unable to save anything in the house."

In just one minute, Mr. Cong's family lost nearly 200 chickens fighting for so many years and were swept away by the fierce flood. "The estimated damage is also more than 100 million VND. Now the mud is all in the house, there is nothing left" - Mr. Cong said.

About 30m away, Mr. Trieu Hoang Dung (56 years old) was still shocked when recounting the moment of life and death. According to Mr. Dung, the flood came so suddenly, within just 20 minutes.

"At around 5am, the water poured in heavily. I have never seen such a terrible flood. The water must be up to 5 meters high. The whole family only had time to escape, all of their assets were swept away" - Mr. Dung said.

As of the afternoon of August 1, in Dien Bien province, floods have killed at least 4 people, 7 people are still buried or swept away by floods.

In Co De village, Xa Dung commune, floods caused landslides, sweeping away a family's house. The husband was lucky to escape, the mother and 3 children were swept away. Forces on the spot are making efforts to search.

In Hang Pu Xi village, Xa Dung commune, 2 children are missing. The road from the commune center to the village was eroded from the positive slope to the road, with fallen trees.

In Tia Dinh village, Tia Dinh commune, a landslide killed two children.

Floods have also wiped out many houses, preliminary statistics show that about 17 households in Hang Pu Xi village, Xa Dung commune were buried and had their houses completely lost. Suoi Lu village, Na Son commune was completely flooded.

According to statistics from the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Dien Bien province, the total estimated damage caused by the flood is about 100 billion VND. Up to now, National Highway 12 to Xa Dung commune has been basically opened.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has just signed Official Dispatch No. 125/CD-TTg dated August 1, 2025 on urgently overcoming the consequences of floods in Dien Bien province and focusing on responding to landslides and flash floods in the mountainous and midland provinces of the North.

According to the dispatch, in the early morning of August 1, Dien Bien, Lao Cai, Tuyen Quang, Thai Nguyen, Bac Ninh, Quang Ninh provinces had heavy to very heavy rain, especially in Dien Bien province, there was heavy rain (some places had total rainfall of nearly 300mm in 6 hours).

The Prime Minister sent his condolences to the families of those who died or went missing, and shared the difficulties and losses of people in disaster-affected areas.
