The Government has just issued Decree No. 16/2026/ND-CP detailing a number of articles of the Railway Law.
Article 6 mentions the naming and renaming of railway lines and stations:
- Principles for naming and renaming routes and railway station names:
Railway line names are named after the starting point and ending point of the line or named after consecutive serial numbers or characters. The starting point and ending point is the name of the place where the starting and ending stations of the line are located;
Branch railway lines connecting to the main railway line, the starting point of this branch railway line is calculated at the location connecting to the main railway line;
The station name is placed according to the place name, names of historical figures, national heroes, and names of historical and cultural relics at the station location, in order or characters;
Line names must not overlap with other lines on the Vietnamese railway system. Railway station names on the same railway line must not overlap. Line names and railway station names must be consistent with the national cultural identity, fine customs and traditions of the locality where the line, station and country are located; ensuring conciseness, easy comprehension, and easy rememberability.
The naming of newly built railway lines and stations is determined in the railway line and station planning step or in the Pre-feasibility Study Report or Project Feasibility Study Report.
- Authority to name and rename existing railway lines and stations:
The Ministry of Construction decides to name and change the name of the national railway line and station based on the proposal of the project investor or the project owner;
Provincial People's Councils decide to name and rename local railway lines and stations under their management scope based on the proposal of the project investor or project owner;
The investor decided to name and change the name of the specialized railway line and station it invested in.
Article 7 stipulates putting railway lines and railway stations into operation:
Railway lines and railway stations when put into operation must be accepted and construction works handed over in accordance with the law on construction.
High-speed railways, grade 1 railways, newly built or upgraded urban railways before being put into operation must be assessed and certified system safety according to the provisions of railway law.
Owners and organizations assigned to manage railway infrastructure assets decide to put into operation railway lines and stations on the railway they invest and manage.
