On the afternoon of May 31, representatives of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Nai City said that the number of caged fish raised on Tri An Lake that died en masse has reached more than 200 tons, causing heavy damage to households.
The Department of Agriculture and Environment is taking fish and water samples according to regulations, but there are no final results yet.
Through actual records, it may be due to the dense farming density causing a shortage of oxygen leading to mass fish deaths.
Regarding policies to support fish farming households that have suffered damage, the Department of Agriculture and Environment is reviewing and researching mechanisms and policies in accordance with regulations.
In the immediate future, in order to share the damage with the people, the Department of Agriculture and Environment, together with the locality, will send forces to support the transfer of dead fish ashore for treatment in accordance with environmental regulations, as well as support the people to move cages and rafts accordingly.
Previously, after heavy rains on May 30 and May 31, farmed fish in cages on Tri An Lake died en masse. After the incident occurred, Tri An ward authorities mobilized professional departments, military forces, grassroots security, neighborhood boards, and forest rangers of Dong Nai Cultural Nature Reserve to support people to pick up dead fish and bring them ashore to protect the environment of Tri An Lake area; collect them for fish farmers to sell to units to make microbial fertilizer.
