Resettlement areas in Gia Lai need to meet the livelihood needs of people in flooded areas

THANH TUẤN |

Gia Lai - Not only do people need safe housing during the rainy season, they also need to be arranged near agricultural land or not too far from the sea to conveniently make a living.

Faced with increasingly complex floods, many households living in low-lying areas, along rivers and streams often face the risk of landslides, deep flooding and unsafety. The Gia Lai provincial government is urgently implementing the construction of new resettlement areas to stabilize the long-term lives of thousands of people.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tao - a resident of Phu Thien commune - said: "Resettlement areas must fully meet safety, livelihood and suitable living conditions. One of the important criteria is that the construction location must be close to agricultural land, making it convenient for people to continue farming, raising livestock and maintaining existing income sources".

For fishing households, the authorities need to plan resettlement areas near seas, lakes or large rivers to ensure uninterrupted livelihoods.

In addition, the technical infrastructure in resettlement areas must be designed synchronously, ensuring safety during the storm season, with drainage systems, high ground and reinforcing houses according to natural disaster prevention standards.

In addition to arranging new housing, Gia Lai province also aims to build sustainable livelihood models, support people to access preferential loans, vocational training, and crop conversion in accordance with the natural conditions of each resettlement area.

The construction of safe and sustainable resettlement areas is considered a long-term solution to minimize damage caused by natural disasters, while helping people feel secure in stabilizing their lives, developing the economy and adapting to climate change.

In the first and middle days of November 2025, Gia Lai province was continuously affected by storm No. 13 (KALMAEGI) - the strongest storm ever to directly hit the province - accompanied by very heavy rains and especially heavy floods immediately afterwards.

According to Mr. Pham Anh Tuan - Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, in the context of urgent time and a huge amount of work, the province is making efforts to complete the arrangement of safe housing for people before Tet according to the direction of the Prime Minister.

The People's Committee of Gia Lai province has proposed that the Ministry of National Defense consider and direct the assignment of Military Region 5 to preside over and coordinate with other military units to support the province in building urgent works.

About more than 3,000 households in the disaster area in Gia Lai need to be relocated to new resettlement areas to ensure safe and stable long-term living.
