Can Tho announces emergency situation of coastal erosion in Vinh Hai commune

PHƯƠNG ANH |

Can Tho - Coastal erosion in Vinh Hai commune, affected dozens of households, crops, and aquaculture ponds.

On October 9, the People's Committee of Can Tho City issued a Decision to declare an emergency situation regarding natural disasters related to coastal erosion in the area of culvert No. 13 to culvert No. 14, Vinh Hai Commune.

According to the People's Committee of Can Tho City, the coastline from the mouth of My Thanh River to near culvert No. 14, Vinh Hai Commune has been seriously eroded in recent years. Some areas have been eroded, no more protective forests, high tides, and sea waves hit the body of the dike directly, causing landslides and breaking of sea dykes in early 2023 and the end of 2024, affecting production and daily life of people inside the dykes.

In the period of 2023 - 2024, with the attention of the Central Government, the locality has been supported to invest in the construction of more than 10 km of underground wave-reducing embankments, promoting high efficiency in protecting dykes, protecting the eroded protective forest belt, creating alluvium, gradually regenerating protective forests, contributing to the sustainable development of this area.

However, the section adjacent to the underground wave-reducing embankment (from culvert No. 13 to culvert No. 14) has not been invested in a wave-reducing embankment outside the dike. Therefore, during the high tide and big waves in early 2025, this area will continue to experience landslides, breaking embankments, flooding people's houses and affecting about 3 hectares of crops and fish ponds.

According to a preliminary survey, this area has about 20 households living and producing outside the dyke, production embankment directly adjacent to the sea (no outer protective forests, small embankment scale, not ensuring the ability to withstand storms). Therefore, during days of high tides, big waves, strong winds, especially when there are tropical depressions or storms, this area is at high risk, threatening the lives and property of people.

In the face of the above situation, the People's Committee of Can Tho City assigned the Department of Agriculture and Environment to regularly monitor and update landslides and emergency recovery progress. Immediately deploy temporary reinforcement solutions at landslide locations to ensure traffic, prevent saltwater and high tides from causing damage to production and people's lives while waiting for a thorough recovery. At the same time, propose solutions to handle landslides and report to the City People's Committee according to regulations.

The People's Committee of Vinh Hai commune was assigned to put up warning signs and widely notify people to grasp the landslide situation, proactively prevent and not travel through dangerous areas. The commune has arranged forces to closely monitor the landslide developments, prepare materials and means, be ready to respond when incidents continue to occur; propagate and mobilize households in the landslide area to move to safe places and regularly report the situation to the Department of Agriculture and Environment.
