On April 21, information from the People's Court of Tuong Duong District (Nghe An) said that after receiving DNA testing results in the dispute over the ownership of male cows between two households in Yen Hoa Commune, the authorities handed over the animal to Ms. La Thi An - the person identified as the legal owner.
The 3-year-old cow is worth about 5 million VND, brought home by Mr. Lo Van Thuong (born in 1963) from Khe Kit, Yen Hop village 2 months ago. Mr. Thuong said that the animal is a successor to his herd of cows, which are being grazed in the forest. However, Mrs. La Thi An (born in 1981) - his neighbor - was determined to be the cow that her family had lost before.
Tensions between the two households led to a dispute. Yen Hoa Commune People's Committee has repeatedly organized mediations but have been unsuccessful. The reason is that the situation of grazing cattle in the forest is a long-standing practice of local people. confusion or dispute over buffalo and cow between households is not uncommon.
The commune government has organized mediation 3 times but to no avail. Both sides affirmed that the cow resembled their mother cow. Finally, the two households agreed to take the cow for DNA testing to clarify.
Tuong Duong District People's Court has coordinated with local authorities to take coffee DNA samples and submit them for appraisal. After a period of waiting, the appraisal results confirmed that the cow was owned by Ms. La Thi An's family.

The DNA testing cost of a disputed cow is up to 7.8 million, higher than the value of the cow (estimated at 5 million). Not to mention, the two sides cost more travel and time to pursue the case. However, both households have signed the commitment: Whoever will have to return the cow and pay the entire test cost.
It is known that this is not the first time Yen Hoa commune has had a pet dispute that required DNA testing. Previously, in 2020, the commune government received a similar incident. In 2018, the People's Court of Tuong Duong district accepted and resolved 8 cases of dispute over the ownership of cows by testing DNA.
