On February 24, the People's Council of Kien Giang province held its 32nd session (special session) to pass a number of important resolutions of the province.
The session approved a draft resolution on the proposal to decide on the policy of converting forest use to other purposes to implement the Project of a domestic waste treatment plant in Bai Bon hamlet, Ham Ninh commune, Phu Quoc city.
According to the Submission, the Household Waste Treatment Plant Project in Bai Bon Hamlet, Ham Ninh Commune, Phu Quoc City, Kien Giang Province, the investor is the Phu Quoc Economic Zone Management Board. The implementation location is at section 2, sub-area 68, Bai Bon hamlet, Ham Ninh commune with a total area of 25 hectares.
The land area with forest planning origin is 25 hectares, of which the area with natural forest status and has not been affected is 14.55 hectares and the land area without forest (including vacant land, traffic roads...) is 10.45 hectares. The area proposed for approval of the policy of converting forest use to other purposes is 14.55 ha.
The purpose of changing the purpose of forest use to implement the domestic waste treatment plant project in Bai Bon hamlet, Ham Ninh commune, Phu Quoc city, Kien Giang province.
According to Decision No. 1289/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister on the Planning of Kien Giang province for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, Kien Giang will become a national marine economic center. Orientation for the development of Phu Quoc as an island city, a regional and international center for tourism, high-class resorts, trade, services and health care applying high technology. Green, smart and sustainable urban development requires effective environmental management solutions.
Currently, the total amount of domestic solid waste in Phu Quoc is about 200 tons/day, forecast to increase by 10-12% per year. However, the city does not have a waste treatment plant, so it has to use a temporary landfill in Dong Cay Sao, seriously affecting the environment and urban aesthetics. This situation affects Phu Quoc's image in the eyes of tourists, especially when the city was chosen to host the 2027 Asia-Pacific Economic Forum (APEC), the need to protect the environment becomes even more urgent.
Therefore, investing in a domestic waste treatment plant in Bai Bon hamlet is extremely necessary to thoroughly solve the problem of waste, protect the environment, improve the quality of life and promote sustainable tourism development.
