On the morning of December 12, in Tam Nong district, Dong Thap province solemnly held the Program to announce the Project "Conservation and Development of Red-crowned Cranes in Tram Chim National Park for the period 2022 - 2032". Attending were Nguyen Quoc Tri - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development; Mr. Le Quoc Phong - Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Head of the National Assembly Delegation of the 15th term.
Speaking at the welcoming ceremony, Mr. Pham Thien Nghia - Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Thap province - said that the Red-crowned Crane has special importance in life: "Not only is it a bird that indicates a clean environment, the restoration of natural biological values... but it is also a symbol of culture and spirituality in the spiritual life of the people".
However, due to many reasons, such as: the impact of global climate change, changes in hydrological regime and impacts from many causes, the Tram Chim ecosystem has changed, affecting the food source and habitat of the Red-crowned Crane.
In addition, the current excessive agricultural cultivation has also partly narrowed the habitat of the Red-crowned Crane, leading to the crane population in Tram Chim gradually decreasing. Therefore, research, cooperation in transferring, raising and conserving the Red-crowned Crane is an urgent requirement.
To realize the dream of "Bringing the Cranes Back", on November 3, 2023, the People's Committee of Dong Thap province approved the Project "Conservation and development of Red-crowned Cranes in Tram Chim National Park for the period 2022 - 2032".
After a period of technical and legal completion with the support and cooperation of dedicated organizations and individuals at home and abroad, especially the sharing of successful experiences from the Crane conservation program in the Kingdom of Thailand, Dong Thap province officially announced the Project.
The project aims to restore and develop Sarus Cranes in Tram Chim National Park by raising and releasing them back into the wild.
Accordingly, from now until 2032, we will strive to release 100 cranes with at least 50 surviving. The released cranes will be able to reproduce and survive in the wild and can live year-round in Tram Chim National Park.
According to Mr. Nghia, the Red-crowned Crane Project will help people and friends from near and far, when coming to Dong Thap, to observe and learn about the habitat and growth characteristics of the Red-crowned Crane, so that people will love this bird even more. "Therefore, preserving the Red-crowned Crane flock is not only for Dong Thap province, for Vietnam but also for preserving this rare species for future mankind," Mr. Nghia further emphasized.
Before that, the delegates visited the Red-crowned Crane Breeding Area and planted native souvenir trees at Area A3 of Tram Chim National Park.
