On March 20, the Traffic Police Department (CSGT) of the Ministry of Public Security said that the Traffic Police Department's electronic information page received many requests from people requesting guidance on distinguishing between pickup cars (pickup trucks) and pickup trucks.
To help people understand the provisions of the law and compare them with their vehicles, the Traffic Police Department exchanges some information as follows:
Based on current legal regulations, the classification of pickup trucks is applied according to Circular No. 53/2024/TT-BGTVT dated November 15, 2024 of the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction) regulating the classification of road vehicles and identification marks of vehicles using clean energy, green energy, and environmentally friendly energy).
In which, pickup trucks (single or double cabin) have been classified into 2 types:
(1) Pickup cars (belonging to the type of car carrying up to 8 seats, excluding the driver's seat, item 2 of Appendix I of Circular 53);
(2) Pickup trucks (belonging to the common type of truck, sections 3, 4 of Appendix IV of Circular 53).
The management agency for technical safety and environmental protection of road motor vehicles (Vietnam Register Department or Motor Vehicle Registration Center) shall base on the technical parameters of each specific vehicle type to determine and classify vehicles as pickup cars or pickup trucks and it is recorded on the Certificate of technical safety and environmental protection quality of vehicles manufactured, assembled, imported or Certificate of technical safety and environmental protection inspection.
To determine whether their car is a pickup car or a pickup truck, vehicle owners base on the type of vehicle and total weight recorded on the Certificate of Technical Safety and Environmental Protection Inspection to see what type of vehicle they have.
