On February 26, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction sent a document to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee proposing to support funding for passengers to travel free of charge on Metro Line 1 and buses on the day of the 16th National Assembly election (March 15, 2026).
The proposal stems from the recommendation of a business wishing to accompany the city to support travel expenses for people during this important political event.
In addition to supporting funding for people to use public transport for free on March 15, 2026, the enterprise also proposed to combine pasting decorative decals to promote the election day of the 16th National Assembly at 3 underground stations and inside 17 trains of Metro Line 1. The expected promotion time is 30 days.
The Department of Construction said that the goal of the program is not only to create favorable conditions for voters to travel safely and economically on election day, but also to contribute to spreading the habit of using public transport. Through this, the city continues to promote the transition to green transport, reduce personal vehicles, and limit congestion and environmental pollution.
The Department of Construction proposed that the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee approve assigning Urban Railway Company Limited No. 1 (HURC1) to preside over and coordinate with relevant businesses to implement financial support for passengers using Metro Line No. 1 and buses on March 15, 2026.
Previously, in 2025 and the beginning of 2026, Ho Chi Minh City has repeatedly exempted Metro Line 1 tickets on major holidays such as April 30, May 1, September 2, New Year's Day and Lunar New Year 2026.
According to the Department of Construction, these free trips bring positive effects when passenger volume increases by about 17% compared to the same period, and at the same time help people have more convenient and friendly experiences with the city's public transport system.
