Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh Airport will be operational from mid-2026. Ho Chi Minh City directs acceleration of connecting transport projects to avoid congestion when the airport comes into operation.

Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just sent a document to the City Police; Department of Construction, Department of Finance, Department of Planning and Architecture and Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board on the implementation of the Prime Minister's Conclusion Notice related to the Long Thanh International Airport project.

This move is to ensure that connectivity infrastructure projects are deployed synchronously and promptly to serve airport operations according to the direction of the Government and the Prime Minister.

The Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee requested the City Police to take the lead in developing a plan to ensure security and order, traffic safety on the main connecting routes between Ho Chi Minh City and Long Thanh airport; proactively regulate traffic during peak periods, especially when the airport goes into operation.

The Department of Construction is assigned to urgently preside over and coordinate with relevant units to review all traffic projects connecting Long Thanh airport with the center of Ho Chi Minh City and Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

Units must clearly identify items that are behind schedule, bottlenecks in terms of technology, site, material sources, construction organization; propose specific and feasible solutions to ensure synchronous completion. The city requests to strengthen inspection and supervision of the site; force the investor and contractor to commit to detailed progress by month, by week.

The Department of Finance is assigned to take the lead in reviewing and advising on allocating sufficient and timely public investment capital for projects under the City's authority; monitoring and urging payment of completed volumes, removing financial obstacles, and not allowing them to affect construction progress.

The Department of Planning and Architecture is responsible for reviewing the suitability of projects connected to the approved plan, ensuring synchronization between aviation infrastructure and urban infrastructure and regional transportation systems. In case planning adjustments are needed, it is necessary to promptly advise the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee in accordance with regulations.

The Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board is required to focus resources, assign leaders to be in charge of each content; review the progress of each bidding package, and develop a plan to compensate for progress if any. This unit must be responsible to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee if delays occur due to subjective reasons.

At the end of 2025, Long Thanh airport (Dong Nai) welcomed the first flights and is expected to operate commercially from mid-2026.

According to aviation industry scenarios, Long Thanh is expected to take on about 80% of the regional international passenger volume, mainly serving the travel needs of Ho Chi Minh City and transit from Tan Son Nhat.

However, the connection between Ho Chi Minh City and Long Thanh airport is currently limited, mainly depending on the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway and National Highways 1, 51 - roads that are often overloaded.

Although the distance from the city center to the airport is about 50 km, the current travel time may take more than 2 hours, or even longer when traffic jams occur on the highway.

To solve the connection problem, many key projects are being implemented such as expanding the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway, Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway, Bien Hoa - Vung Tau, Ring Road 3 of Ho Chi Minh City and An Phu intersection.

According to the plan, these projects will be completed in 2026 and early 2027, contributing to reducing traffic pressure and opening more access routes to Long Thanh airport from Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces.

In the long term, Ho Chi Minh City will expand the urban railway network, such as extending the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien line to Dong Nai and investing in the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line, helping to shorten the time from the city to Long Thanh airport.
