On the evening of November 24, Ben Quan Commune Police (Quang Tri Provincial Police) confirmed that from the people's report about the discovery of a bomb remaining after the war on the Ben Hai River (Cay Tam Village, Ben Quan Commune, Quang Tri Province), this unit coordinated with the Ben Quan Commune Military Command to go to the scene and organize a protection area.
To handle the bomb, on the morning of November 24, the Quang Tri Provincial Military Command and the NPA/RENEW mine clearing organization were present at the scene to receive and handle it.

Through inspection, the authorities determined that this was a very high- casualty MK82 bomb made in the US. This type of bomb is 274mm in diameter, 2,220mm long, 227kg heavy, and contains 87kg of explosives.
Because the bomb was located in a rugged area and the terrain was difficult to move, the units detonated it on the spot.
Before the blasting, the Commune Police and the Commune Military Force mobilized and evacuated 43 households with 196 people within the affected area to a safe place.
