Over the past year, Thai Nguyen has continuously suffered from widespread flooding, seriously affecting people's lives and production and business. In particular, in the historic flood in early October 2025, the locality suffered more than VND12,200 billion in damage, nearly 70,000 houses were flooded.
In fact, in the center of Thai Nguyen, over 50mm of rain caused many areas to be deeply flooded. The reality of heavy rain and flooding greatly affects people's lives.

Ms. Le Thi Lien (Phan Dinh Phung ward) said: "The situation of heavy rain for a few hours causing many blood vessels to be flooded makes people very difficult. The drainage system is often congested and is always overloaded.
People hope to soon have a definitive solution. In the past two years, people have had a hard time due to frequent flooding. Heavy rain prevented water from draining, many locations had rising water and flooded into houses. Every time it rains, people are worried, their daily activities are disrupted, and there is a lot of economic damage".
To completely solve this problem, Thai Nguyen province is planning to implement projects to prevent flooding.
The systems of flood prevention works in the central province and the construction of Gia Bay bridge are considered a comprehensive solution. The project has a total estimated investment of more than VND 22,900 billion. Including the Huong 2 Waterfall spillway, completing the dike system on both banks of the Cau River, deploying pumping stations, dredging Mo Linh stream and building new bridges to expand the flood drainage range.

The new Gia Bay Bridge alone has a total investment of more than 600 billion VND. When completed, it will overcome the flow bottleneck, ensure traffic and increase drainage capacity for the entire area.
Regarding the flooding situation in the central area, Chairman of Thai Nguyen Provincial People's Committee Vuong Quoc Tuan also requested that before November 30, the Department of Construction must have a preliminary report on the survey plan, assessment of the drainage system and propose solutions to handle local flooding. Review the organizational model of the unit operating the drainage system.
The Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee suggested that the Department of Construction urgently hire experts, use specialized machinery and cameras to survey and develop a plan to handle congestion in drainage systems.

Previously, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment also worked with Thai Nguyen to discuss solutions to handle the flooding situation. Accordingly, there needs to be a synchronous solution to drain floodwaters in the entire Cau River basin. Upstream, it is proposed to build 4 reservoirs with a capacity of about 200 million m3 to cut floodwaters. If these 4 reservoirs are built, the flood will be cut by about 130 million m3.
In the long term, the Ministry and the province will study the plan to build 4 reservoirs in the upstream of the Cau River to cut flood, along with solutions to increase the ability to drain flood in the downstream.
