In recent days, information that Lao Cai province is about to implement a project to overcome and handle flooding and inundation along the Red River with a total investment of about VND8,500 billion has made many people happy.
"If the project is implemented early and completed quickly, the landslide will no longer exist, and when there are storms, floods or heavy rains, flooding will also be reduced" - Mr. Nguyen Van Duc shared.
It is known that the Standing Committee of Lao Cai Provincial Party Committee has held a Conference to give opinions (2nd time) on a plan to overcome and handle the flooding and inundation situation along the Red River in the central area of Lao Cai province.

At the Conference, the Provincial Construction Investment Project Management Board No. 1 said that the project "Covercoming and handling flooding and inundation along the Red River in the central area of Lao Cai province and surrounding areas" will be implemented in the wards of Yen Bai, Au Lau, Van Phu, Nam Cuong and Tran Yen commune.
The project is about 33km long, with a total estimated investment of VND 8,500 billion; the expected implementation period is from 2025 to 2029.
According to the report at the Conference, in the past 10 years, the Red River water level has continuously appeared above alert level 3 in the central area of the province and neighboring areas, causing extremely heavy damage, seriously affecting people's lives.
In addition to flooding caused by floodwaters from the Red River, the central area of Yen Bai City (old) also has 19 locally flooded areas due to heavy rain due to unsynchronized drainage systems. In just 2 years (2024 - 2025), flood damage has affected nearly 20,000 households in the area.

On December 10, the reporter noted the reality of the water in the Bai Duong Residential Group area, Nam Cuong Ward (formerly Bai Duong Village, Tuy Loc Commune) causing serious riverbank erosion.
Along the river, many landslides have formed, and sand and dirt keep flowing down after each beat of water. Outside the river, many sand suction ships are anchored.
Ms. Le Thi Hai Yen (Nam Cuong ward) - shared: "For many years now, the riverbank has been continuously eroded, the most serious of which was last year, eroding close to my kitchen and barn. If there was a project to prevent erosion, it would be great to keep the land".
In addition to preventing riverbank erosion, the upcoming water treatment project will be designed to cut flood peaks, as well as upgrade the drainage system in the central province to synchronize, minimizing flooding.

Speaking with Lao Dong, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh - Chairman of Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee said that the project to overcome and handle flooding and inundation along the Red River in the central area of Lao Cai province and surrounding areas is identified as a key project of the province in the coming time.
"The Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee is assigning functional sectors to research and develop specific implementation plans to prevent flooding in areas within the project area, ensuring sustainability, not creating negative impacts on natural flows and the ecological environment.
The project implemented in addition to flood prevention will solve many problems, create land funds to implement new residential area projects, build urban areas, have long-term stability, protect the environment, and at the same time improve the urban landscape and the landscape of the Red River" - Mr. Tuan Anh shared.

Chairman of Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Tuan Anh also emphasized: "Successful implementation of the project also contributes to promoting socio-cultural development in the development area, in this area, festivals and folk cultural games can be organized, tourism can be developed through culinary space and night-time economy".
Currently, the People's Committee of Lao Cai province is focusing on directing relevant agencies and units to urgently coordinate in developing a pre-feasibility study plan for the Project as soon as possible and calculating and arranging capital plans for implementation.
