The Standing Committee of Lao Cai Provincial Party Committee has just held a Conference for comments (2nd time) on solutions to overcome and handle flooding and inundation along the Red River in the central area of Lao Cai province and surrounding areas.
At the Conference, the Provincial Investment and Construction Project Management Board No. 1 said that the Project "Covering and handling flooding and inundation along the Red River in the central area of Lao Cai province and surrounding areas" will be implemented in the wards of Yen Bai, Au Lau, Van Phu, Nam Cuong and Tran Yen commune.

The project is about 33km long, with a total estimated investment of VND 8,500 billion; the expected implementation period is from 2025 to 2029.
According to the report at the Conference, in the past 10 years, the Red River water level has continuously appeared above alert level 3 in the central area of the province and neighboring areas, causing extremely heavy damage, seriously affecting people's lives.
In addition to flooding caused by floodwaters from the Red River, the central area of Yen Bai City (old) also has 19 locally flooded areas due to heavy rain due to unsynchronized drainage systems. In just 2 years (2024 and 2025), flood damage has affected nearly 20,000 households in the area.

Mr. Trinh Viet Hung - Secretary of Lao Cai Provincial Party Committee emphasized: The project "Covering and handling flooding and inundation along the Red River in the central area of Lao Cai province and surrounding areas" is a water treatment project of special importance, because it is related to the lives and safety of thousands of households.
"The project implementation process must ensure compliance with natural laws and be supported by the people. Therefore, the steps to be taken need to be very scientific, meticulous, and cautious, ensuring high efficiency," emphasized Provincial Party Secretary Trinh Viet Hung.

The Lao Cai Provincial Party Secretary assigned the relevant agencies that the water treatment project must be "compromising", that is, preventing flooding in the project area but must ensure sustainability, not creating negative impacts on the flow and ecological environment.
At the same time, renovating the urban landscape and the Red River landscape and creating new land funds to build new urban areas and residential areas, long-term stabilizing people's lives.
With that important significance, Provincial Party Secretary Trinh Viet Hung requested the Provincial People's Committee Party Committee to focus on directing relevant agencies and units to urgently coordinate in developing a pre-feasibility study plan for the Project as soon as possible and calculate and arrange capital plans for implementation.
