Some breakwater still collapsed
On August 23 and 24, before storm No. 5 made landfall, the Dan Hai commune government had to mobilize hundreds of people, including armed forces, militia, youth union members and people to make deposits, transport boulders and sand into sacks to reinforce hundreds of meters of the eroded coast.
The reinforcement and anti-landslide work aims to protect the Hoi Thong dike, protecting hundreds of households in Hoi Long and Tan Ninh Chau villages living in this coastal area.
Reporters from Lao Dong Newspaper were present at the coast of Dan Hai commune, recording that the place where hundreds of people participated in hot stone baskets and sandbags to prevent coastal erosion in Dan Hai commune had a breakwater project in front of the sea, about 50m from the shore.
Through observation, this breakwater has many open sections (not seamless embankments). It was in these open sections that the waves roared up and hit the shore, causing deep landslides inland.
Many local people are wondering this issue, asking why the breakwater is not yet effective and why it is designed so that such openings cause waves to enter through those gate slides, causing landslides, threatening the safety of residential areas.
Gradually promoting the effect?
On August 25, Mr. Tran Quynh Thao - Chairman of the People's Committee of Dan Hai Commune - said that before storm No. 5 made landfall, the coast in Hoi Long and Tan Ninh Chau villages suffered heavy landslides, posing a potential safety risk, threatening the residential area inside the Hoi Thong dike.
Therefore, on August 23 and 24, the Dan Hai commune government mobilized nearly 500 people and a number of excavators to transport 600m3 of boulders and 200m3 of soil to reinforce and embank the coast to prevent landslides.
Along with the anti-landslide embankment, to ensure the safety of people before the storm made landfall, the locality had to evacuate more than 600 people to a solid location.
Mr. Thao also said that it was the open sections at the breakwater that caused strong waves to hit deep inland, causing coastal erosion.
"This design of the breakwater in the first phase caused landslides through the openings, but about 5 to 6 years later it will be completed and silted up. At that time, there will be no more landslides. This breakwater project has only been completed for 1 year, so it has not been effective and needs more time to continue to fill the sand" - Mr. Thao acknowledged.
The wave-breaking embankment project in Xuan Hoi commune (now Dan Hai commune) is invested by the People's Committee of Nghi Xuan district (old) with a length of 1.4km, with a total investment of 15 billion VND. The project started at the end of 2023 and was completed in mid-2024.
