Bac Lieu river dyke gradually takes shape
On September 21, Lao Dong's records showed that in the section from Bac Lieu market to Ton Duc Thang bridge, passing through Vinh Trach ward and Bac Lieu ward, Ca Mau province, construction units are urgently building the Bac Lieu riverbank embankment.
Many concrete pillars are gathered along the construction site, some sections have formed embankments. The project not only aims to protect the riverbank but also creates a road along the embankment, opening up more traffic space for the area.
The Bac Lieu riverbank embankment project is about 6km long, implemented in the 2022 - 2026 period. After adjustment, the total investment is more than 1,044 billion VND, from the central budget, local budget and other legal capital sources.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Duc - Director of the Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Agricultural and Rural Development Works of Ca Mau - said that construction units are urgently deploying the project, ensuring progress, soon putting it into use, meeting the needs of people on both sides of the river.
People are no longer worried about landslides
For households living close to the riverbank, the gradual formation of the embankment not only has the meaning of urban embellishment but first of all reduces the worry of landslides.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hung - a resident of Vinh Trach ward, whose house is near Ton Duc Thang bridge - said that before the project was implemented, some sections of the riverbank were eroded close to people's houses.
Previously, when the embankment construction was not deployed, some sections were landslides, eating close to people's houses, which was very dangerous. Many people had to move their belongings ashore to ensure safety. Currently, the construction unit is building the embankment, people are more reassured, and in the near future they will no longer worry about running away from landslides," Mr. Hung said.
Ms. Tran Kim Linh - a resident of Bac Lieu ward - said that initially, her family only thought of building a dyke project to prevent landslides. When the project deployed an additional road along the riverbank, people's travel became more convenient.
I thought it was just a dyke project, but unexpectedly we built a road alongside the dyke. Before, the bank of the Bac Lieu River did not have a road even though it was right in the center, now there is a road, we can travel easily," Ms. Linh shared.
Previously, in June 2024, a section of the Bac Lieu - Ca Mau riverbank in hamlet 6, ward 5, Bac Lieu city, former Bac Lieu province, experienced a landslide with a length of about 800m, affecting 39 houses.
Through field surveys, functional agencies initially determined that landslides have many causes. Among them, this area is dredging the Bac Lieu - Ca Mau river. The time of landslide is when the tide is low, the water level on the river is low; the load on the shore, plus rain, makes the soil saturated with water, contributing to landslides.
The construction of the dyke line is therefore expected by riverside residents to create a corridor to protect the banks, limit the risk of landslides, and improve traffic and living conditions in the central area of Bac Lieu and Vinh Trach wards.
