Testing 64 food samples at 8 key markets in Kien Giang

NGUYÊN ANH |

Kien Giang - As Tet approaches, the demand for food increases, so consumers need to be extremely careful with floating food products of unknown origin.

The Department of Industry and Trade of Kien Giang province has just chaired and coordinated with the Provincial Consumer Protection Association and functional agencies and units to conduct surveys and tests on the quality of goods and services to propose opinions from specialized agencies and consumers.

The authorities surveyed and randomly purchased 64 samples of bottled water, vegetables, fruits and fresh noodles at 8 key markets in Kien Luong, Hon Dat, Chau Thanh, Go Quao, Vinh Thuan, U Minh Thuong districts, Rach Gia city and Ha Tien city. Each market group purchased 2 samples of bottled water, 2 samples of vegetables, 2 samples of fruits and 2 samples of fresh noodles and sent them to the laboratory on the same day for testing.

It was found that the nitrate index on green cabbage in some markets was still high, with a content of over 300 mg/kg, due to excessive use of nitrate fertilizers during cultivation. Environmental and climatic conditions affect the nitrate absorption process of crops, and lack of control and supervision in the production and processing of agricultural products.

The total number of anaerobic bacteria in vermicelli samples sold in some markets is still high, with the number of Coliform exceeding the allowable limit; the total number of yeast and mold exceeding the allowable limit. The high microbial content in vermicelli samples is due to many reasons such as: processing, unsanitary storage conditions; unreasonable sales environment; transportation process not meeting standards...

To contribute to protecting people's health and ensuring the protection of consumer rights, the Department of Industry and Trade requests relevant agencies and units to propagate to people and consumers to raise their vigilance against products suspected of containing pesticide residues, tinophan, borax and some microbiological indicators. Choose supermarkets and stores selling clean agricultural products, choose agricultural products with origin, brand, and food safety quality inspection.

Strengthen propaganda, dissemination, and guidance for producers and traders to raise awareness and change production practices. Encourage the application of scientific and technological advances in production, and the use of safe organic biological measures to prevent and control diseases. Recommend limiting the use of pesticides; in case of using pesticides, they must comply with regulations.

Strengthen inspection and strict supervision of the trading and use of pesticides, and strictly handle cases of use exceeding prescribed levels.

Kien Giang Market Management Department coordinates to strengthen market inspection and control of compliance with legal regulations on production and trading of plant protection drugs and food safety at markets, supermarkets, and convenience stores; strictly handle organizations and individuals who violate the regulations.
