Early exploration of Mo Xoai
According to information from the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, since 1698, Phu Gia Dinh was established, consisting of Tan Binh and Phuoc Long districts. In which, Phuoc An commune (belonging to Phuoc Long district) is now Ba Ria - Vung Tau province and part of Dong Nai (Long Khanh, Xuan Loc, Cam My...). Con Dao (Con Dao) is currently under Ha Tien.
110 years later, in 1808, the district was changed to the capital and the district commune. At that time, Phuoc An commune became Phuoc An district (under Phuoc Long government), consisting of 2 communes Phuoc Hung and An Phu.
In 1819, Con toi island was transferred to Can Gio (Gia Dinh); in 1839 it was transferred to Vinh Long; in 1861 it was transferred to Ha Tien; then in 1882 Con Dao district was established in Nam Ky. In addition, in 1937 Phuoc An and Long Thanh districts were also separated to form Phuoc Tuy province, consisting of 3 districts of Phuoc An, Long Thanh, Long Khanh.
In 1862, Phuoc An district was changed to Thanh Tra Ba Ria district ( Named after a woman in Binh Dinh in the remote Mo Xoai area, worshiped by local people); in 1869, it was changed to Ba Ria Advisory Area. In 1885, Vung Tau City was established from the discoursal Area.
In 1900, the area was changed to Ba Ria province, then 5 years later (1905) it merged Vung Tau, General Co Trach, Nhon Xuong (Binh Thuan) into Ba Ria. In 1929 it was separated to form Vung Tau province from Vung Tau commune, Son Long village and Can Gio district (Gia Dinh), then demoted to a city in 1934.
In 1947, Vung Tau province was re-established, then 1956 Phuoc Tuy province was established from Ba Ria and Vung Tau provinces with 6 districts (including Long Dien and Dat Do districts), 8 communes and 39 communes; at the same time, Con Dao province was established. From 1958 onwards, many mergers and separations of districts, communes...

The period from 1975 to present
In 1975, Dong Nai province was established from Bien Hoa, Long Khanh, Phuoc Tuy provinces, part of Binh Tuy. In September 1976, Con Dao district was established under Ho Chi Minh City, but in January 1977, it was transferred to Hau Giang province.
In 1979, the Vung Tau - Con Dao special zone was established, including Vung Tau town, Long Son commune, and Con Dao district.
In 1991, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province was established from Chau Thanh, Long Dat and Xuyen Moc districts (Dong Nai province) and the Vung Tau - Con Dao special zone.
In 1994, dissolved Chau Thanh district, then established Ba Ria town, Tan Thanh district, Chau Duc district; established Phu My town under Tan Thanh, Ngai Giao town under Chau Duc.
In 2003, Long Dat district was dissolved, Long Dien district and Dat Do district were established. In 2007, Dat Do town and Phuoc Hai town were established under Dat Do district.
In 2012, Ba Ria City was established on August 22, 2012. In 2018, Phu My town was established on the basis of Tan Thanh district; then continued to become Phu My city from March 1, 2025.
From January 1, 2025, Long Dien and Dat Do districts will be merged into Long Dat district; a number of commune-level localities will be merged according to the Resolution issued by the National Assembly Standing Committee.
