A series of trillion-dong projects are about to be implemented
Nguyen Tat Thanh Street - which is considered the " Traffic bloodline" connecting the South with the center - has been overloaded for many years. The road surface is only about 14m wide with 4 lanes, causing this section to be often congested.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction has just proposed a project to expand the 2.5km section from Khanh Hoi Bridge to Tan Thuan Bridge to 6-8 lanes. The project also includes the construction of Hoang Dieu underpass with a scale of at least four lanes and the construction of a new Tan Thuan 1 bridge to replace the old bridge that is over 120 years old. The total estimated investment is about VND2,950 billion.
Not only Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, the South of Ho Chi Minh City is also preparing to welcome many large infrastructure projects. One of them is Nguyen Khoi Bridge - Road, with a total investment of more than VND 3,724 billion, expected to start construction in November 2025 and be completed by the end of 2027.
This project will build a concrete overpass over 2.5km long, 6.5 - 25.5m wide, connecting District 7 with District 1 (formerly), across Te Canal and Ben Nghe Canal. In addition to the main bridge, the project also builds more than 1.1km of the bridgehead road, expanding Hoang Trong Mau, Vo Van Kiet sections and Nguyen Khoi service road.
When put into operation, the project will create a new connection axis, significantly shortening travel time from the South to the city center, reducing pressure on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street and Kenh Te Bridge, which are often congested during rush hour.
Another key project is Thu Thiem 4 Bridge - a project expected to open a direct connection between the South and the new urban area of Thu Thiem. With a total investment of about VND4,840 billion, Thu Thiem 4 bridge is expected to be implemented in the 2025-2028 period. When completed, this bridge will shorten the travel distance between the South and the East, while reducing traffic pressure on a series of existing routes such as Nguyen Tat Thanh, Ton Duc Thang, Huynh Tan Phat and Nguyen Van Linh.
Ho Chi Minh City is also promoting the Binh Tien bridge - road project with a total capital of nearly 6,300 billion VND, expected to start construction in 2026 and be completed in 2028. This bridge - road is about 3.1km long, 4 to 6 lanes wide, starting from Pham Van Chi Street, crossing Tau Hu Canal, Doi Canal, then continuing to Nguyen Van Linh Street to connect with the National Highway 50 access road. Below is a parallel road with 2 to 6 lanes.
Building more overpasses and underpasses
The project to upgrade the North-South axis (Nguyen Huu Tho), the section from Nguyen Van Linh to Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway, has a total capital of nearly VND9,900 billion, expected to start construction in 2026 and be completed in 2028. The project will build an elevated road about 6.62km long (4 car lanes) over a total length of more than 8km of the project, and at the same time build two intersections Nguyen Van Linh - Nguyen Huu Tho and Nguyen Huu Tho - Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway.
Previously, the Nguyen Van Linh - Nguyen Huu Tho intersection completed two two-way underpasses on Nguyen Van Linh Avenue, significantly reducing congestion at the southern gateway area.
National Highway 1, the section from Kinh Duong Vuong to the Tay Ninh provincial border (formerly Long An), will also be expanded to 10-12 lanes, expected to start construction in 2026 and be completed in 2028.
On this route, Kinh Duong Vuong overpass will be built with a scale of 4 lanes, while Binh Dien bridge area will have two more parallel bridges with 2 lanes on each side to increase traffic capacity. Binh Thuan intersection - the intersection between National Highway 1, Nguyen Van Linh Avenue and Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway - will be built with 3 floors, including an underpass, a central roundabout and an overpass system, helping to divert traffic and reduce traffic conflicts.
Ho Chi Minh City also invests in two major intersections connecting to Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway. The National Highway 50 intersection with this expressway has been approved, with a total capital of nearly VND591 billion, expected to start construction at the end of 2025 and be completed in 2026. The project is about 1.3 km long, including an overpass and branches connecting the two routes. When synchronized with the project to expand National Highway 50 and the entire Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway, the South will have a complete inter-regional transportation system.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction also proposed to invest in the Rung Sac intersection with the Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway, with a total capital of nearly 3,000 billion VND, expected to be approved at the end of 2025 and started construction in 2026. The project will arrange a 50m radius central roundabout, build an additional unit on the expressway to complete the scale of 8 lanes, and at the same time build two double-way underpasses from Rung Sac to Can Gio bridge and vice versa.
