On August 15, Mr. Tran Van Huyen - Deputy Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee led a delegation to survey the reality and direct remedial work at landslide points in Nhon My commune.
Mr. Cao Minh Thom - Chairman of Nhon My Commune People's Committee said that the commune has recorded more than 100 landslide points with a total length of more than 1,600m. This situation has cut off 5 key roads, completely swept away 9 houses of people, estimated property damage of more than 6.2 billion VND.
The Chairman of Nhon My Commune People's Committee also said that in the past time, local authorities have made efforts to overcome more than 32 landslide points and have reinforced many small landslide points. For large-scale landslide points, the commune is waiting for resource support from the city to handle them.
According to statistics, from the beginning of May 2026 to now, large and small landslides have continuously arisen, penetrating deep into the mainland, causing serious breakage and subsidence of traffic infrastructure in the area.
It is known that Nhon My commune is located in a location with a dense system of canals and weak soil along the Hau River and Rach Mop River banks, which is becoming one of the most painful landslide spots in the area.
A typical example of this situation is the particularly complicated erosion diễn biến in some key areas with weak soil foundations such as hamlets: An Phu Dong, Phu Tay and Phung An.
Ms. Le Thi Hoang Mai (Phu Tay hamlet, Nhon My commune) said that mentioning the landslide the day before, she is still shocked to this day.
It was 4:15 am, around the beginning of May. I was preparing to start running the ferry when I witnessed firsthand the landslide into the river. The incident happened very quickly, in just 10 to 15 minutes, the entire ferry bridge collapsed completely, and several coconut trees lined the wharf fell into the water," Ms. Mai recounted in shock.
According to Ms. Mai, the roads are all collapsed, the most difficult thing is the travel of students because this area is crowded with students going to school by ferry. The main road is cut off, if there is no way to go, the children will be deadlocked.
Through the survey trip, Mr. Tran Van Huyen - Deputy Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee requested Nhon My commune to urgently review and detail all landslide points in the area, especially urgent locations that need capital support.
At the same time, it is necessary to compile a statistical list of affected households, especially those who have completely lost residential land and houses, and send it to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City as soon as possible. On that basis, the City Party Committee will have timely directions to support communes and people to overcome the consequences and soon have stable housing.
Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee proposed that, in order to ensure the safety of people's lives and property, in the immediate future, the commune needs to mobilize local forces to reinforce, plant dangerous warning signs and open bypass roads to create conditions for people and students to travel safely and conveniently.
Faced with the risk of deep landslides in Phung An hamlet, in May 2026, Can Tho City People's Committee issued a decision announcing an emergency situation for natural disasters to urgently respond and protect the safety of the school system and densely populated residential areas inside.
