Heavy rain causes landslides, cutting off many national highways in mountainous areas of Nghe An

QUANG ĐẠI |

Nghe An - In the past two days, prolonged heavy rains have caused serious landslides on many national highways through the mountainous areas of the West, causing traffic congestion.

On November 1, Mr. Denh Ba Long - Chairman of the People's Committee of Huoi Tu commune (Nghe An) - said that National Highway 16 through the commune was affected by a landslide on the embankment, causing a large amount of rock and soil from the back of the mountain to overflow, completely cutting off the road.

The landslide was located between Huoi Thang and Huoi Don villages, stretching for tens of meters, with mud covering the road surface, making it impossible for people and vehicles to travel.

Immediately after the incident, local authorities assigned forces to be on duty, erected warning signs and notified people not to pass through the dangerous area. The road maintenance unit is mobilizing leveling machinery and urgently repairing it to reopen the route.

In Binh Chuan commune, heavy rain on the night of October 30 and early morning of October 31 also caused landslides on National Highway 48C, the Pu Huot slope - the border section between Nga My commune and Binh Chuan. Dozens of cubic meters of soil, rocks and forest trees overflowed onto the road, causing traffic congestion for many hours.

By noon on October 31, the temporary road was opened, but on the morning of November 1, the landslide recurred with a larger volume. The locality has arranged 2 leveling excavators, trying to temporarily clear the route during the day.

In Huoi Tu commune, National Highway 16 was eroded for tens of meters, rocks and soil from the back of the mountain fell onto the road, completely cutting off the section through Huoi Thang - Huoi Don village. The authorities have put up warning signs, been on duty 24/7 and mobilized machinery to fix the problem to soon reopen the route.

In Mon Son commune, the water level of Giang river rose about 80cm above normal, causing the overflow bridge to Cua Rao village (Anh Son commune) to be deeply flooded, making it impossible for people and vehicles to pass. The road from Khe Khang Border Control Station to Bung village was also eroded with about 60m3 of rock and soil, temporarily cutting off traffic.

In Kim Bang commune, heavy rain flooded the spillways about 50cm, making it difficult to travel. Thanh Thuy Border Guard Station and local authorities have put up signs, put up warning ropes and checked areas at risk of landslides. In particular, at km 75 on National Highway 46, the section up to Thanh Thuy Border Gate, a landslide occurred on the positive slope, causing traffic congestion. The authorities are urgently leveling and clearing the route.

Currently, mountainous localities in Nghe An are warning people to limit traveling through mountain roads during heavy rain, beware of landslides, and ensure traffic safety.
