According to the Institute of Geophysics, at 7:52 pm on May 10, 2026, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 occurred in the area of Muong Hung commune, Son La province.
The determined coordinates are about 20,954 degrees North latitude, 103.826 degrees East longitude, focal depth of about 10.2km.
The Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Center said that the disaster risk level due to earthquakes is level 0.
Immediately after the earthquake, many security camera videos on Facebook recorded strong shaking accompanied by loud noises, causing people to panic and run out; some images also showed cracks in houses and tilted furniture.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thang (resident of Song Ma, about 20 km from the epicenter) said: "I was sitting drinking tea when I suddenly felt the house shaking, things making a loud noise, so I rushed out with everyone around.
According to Mr. Thang, this area still occasionally records tremors, occurring once every 2 years. However, this time it is felt more clearly because the epicenter is closer, while before earthquakes often occurred in the Dien Bien area or in other localities of Son La province.
In Chieng Khoong commune (the epicenter is about 30km), Ms. Quang Thi Bo (residing in Cang village) said that at the time of the shaking, there were two young children studying with the elderly in the house, so everyone was panicked and rushed out into the yard.
Shaking quite strongly, everyone felt lightheaded and lightly dizzy. After checking, the family discovered a large crack extending to the roof on the wall above the house's porch," Ms. Bo shared.
Also in Chieng Khuong commune, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuyen (Hung Ha village), said that at the time of the vibration, the water stall had about 5 customers sitting when suddenly tables, chairs, and belongings shook violently for about 4-6 seconds. Many people rushed out in fear.
The shaking was quite strong, everyone was surprised. After the shaking stopped, many people were still standing on the street because of worry," Mr. Tuyen shared.
Currently, functional agencies are still continuing to monitor this earthquake.
