According to the My Thuan Project Management Board (investor), for the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway project, up to now, the site clearance work has reached 100% of the main route and 99% of the connecting route; currently, there are 200m remaining within the connecting route in Can Tho City due to landfill No. 8.
According to Lao Dong Newspaper, at landfill No. 8 (in Cai Rang district, Can Tho city), many machines, equipment and workers are currently mobilized at the scene to urgently relocate the landfill.
Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper reporter, Mr. Tran Tien Dat - Deputy Director of the Land Fund Development Project Management Board of Cai Rang District (Can Tho City) - said that due to the short relocation of landfill No. 8 (45 days), and the erratic weather in the past 10 days, digging was very difficult.
According to Mr. Tran Tien Dat, in addition to weather obstacles, rising groundwater and leachate also greatly affect progress, making it difficult for machinery and equipment to move.
“The leaking water is causing many difficulties for the construction unit. Currently, the construction unit is digging temporary pits to collect the leaking water. When the temporary pits are full, they have to pump it to another place,” said Mr. Dat.
The Deputy Director of the Cai Rang District Land Fund Development Project Management Board also informed that the Board is coordinating with the construction unit to discuss the construction plan and measures, and to concentrate equipment and workers to compensate for the days off due to the rain. Currently, the units are working both day and night, with machinery and equipment operating non-stop, and workers are divided into shifts, working continuously from morning until about 10pm every day.
It was observed that the landfill was dug about 7 - 8m deep, but the stench was not too strong. Because the amount of garbage here has existed for more than 50 years, most of it has decomposed. However, the fact that machinery and vehicles move and lie precariously on the landfill to dig garbage at a depth of 7 - 8m is also potentially dangerous.
Regarding labor safety, Mr. Tran Tien Dat added that the Board has requested the supervisory unit to closely monitor the construction unit, the excavation equipment must ensure the ground is clear, and the moving vehicles must ensure that they do not sink into the mud or fall into deep holes.
During construction, the unit will arrange temporary roads and service roads; install temporary corrugated iron fences around the landfill to protect the construction area.
This landfill has an area of 4.3 hectares with a total volume of over 162,000 tons of waste. The relocation of the landfill was approved by the People's Committee of Cai Rang District with an area of 1.95 hectares; the cost is 13.08 billion VND; the implementation time is 45 days, starting from November 15.
Previously, on the afternoon of December 15, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his delegation inspected the Can Tho - Ca Mau Expressway in Hau Giang Province. The Prime Minister requested the Can Tho City People's Committee to direct departments, branches, and local authorities to completely handle the relocation of the landfill on the IC2 - National Highway 1 connection route, handing over 100% of the site in December 2024.
The Can Tho - Ca Mau Expressway is over 110km long, with a total investment of over VND27,500 billion, and will start construction in January 2023 and be completed by the end of 2025. The project is divided into two sub-projects. Of which, the Can Tho - Hau Giang section is over 37km long; the Hau Giang - Ca Mau section is over 73km long.
The section through Can Tho is 0.6km long, the total length of the connecting route is more than 9.2km. Of which, the section from Nam Song Hau National Highway to IC2 intersection is more than 2.2km long; The section from IC2 intersection to National Highway 1 is 7km long, landfill No. 8 is located at the intersection with National Highway 1.
