Farmers increase water pumps to save vegetable gardens

Hanoi - Heavy rain due to the impact of storm No. 10 caused flooding in the vegetable areas of Hanoi's suburban areas, farmers had to pump water day and night to save their family's "rice fishing vessels".

Flooded vegetable fields

Mr. Nguyen Van Suot (Thuong Cat ward, Hanoi) sadly said: "The heavy rain all day caused my family's vegetable fields to be deeply flooded. If they are not pumped in time, the vegetables will all rot in just a few days. Four sao of vegetables lost are considered a loss of revenue.

Not only Mr. Suot's family, many vegetable growers here are in a similar situation. The heavy rain caused many areas of water spinach, broccoli, lettuce, coriander, fennel... in the near harvest stage to suddenly sink. People have no choice but to mobilize maximum pumps to drain water to save vegetables.

"Women and children who have pumps run at full capacity, and those who do not have them, rent them together, as long as they can drain the water as quickly as possible. Usually pumping water only 2-3 hours a day is enough, but now we have to take turns on duty day and night, Mr. Nguyen Van Be shared.

Night-time sleep to save vegetables

Recorded on September 30, many farmers in Thuong Cat ward still had to wade into the fields to check the pumps. Every few hours, they turn on the machine to drain water and prevent flooding for the vegetable garden.

Mr. Nguyen Van Suot shared: "My family has been almost un sleepy these past few days. During the day, they clean up damaged vegetables and open drainage ditches. At night, my son and I took turns on the pump. If the machine stops for a few hours, the vegetables will be waterlogged and spoiled.

"The whole family has to carry it together. Vegetables are the only source of life for the family, if the crop is gone, they don't know where to look. There are times when I feel very discouraged when I see the whole field submerged in water, but if I give up, I will not get any money to survive. Farmers can only try their best, hoping for God's protection and less rain to avoid flooding," Mr. Suot added.

According to him, right from the time of the forecast of heavy rain, the family had prepared pumps. However, the amount of water was too much and he could not drain it in time, so he had to increase the pump to save the green onion and chamomile gardens.
