When coming to households in Hamlet 3, Thanh Phu Commune, Cau Ke District, it can be seen that most families are equipped with rollers and water containers with large capacity.
Mr. Nguyen Van Sanh - a household living next to the centralized clean water supply station in Thanh Phu commune - still equipped with many large and small rainwater containers to have water to use during the dry season and when saltwater intrusion.
According to Mr. Sanh, every year, from the beginning of December of the previous year to about May of the following year, the salinity sluices are closed to prevent salinity intrusion, thereby gradually draining the water in the rivers.
"To save water for monthly use, the family has stored rainwater in the bulbs. This water is used to wash vegetables, fish and even boil them to drink," Mr. Sanh added.
Also preparing plastic tanks containing 4,000 liters of rainwater, Ms. Nguyen Thi Bang in Thanh Phu commune, said that this water source contributes to reducing more than 50% of the monthly purchase of tap water.
Normally, about 10 m3 of water is used per month, but thanks to the rainwater reserved for use, each month only about 5 m3 is consumed.
"Although the clean water supply network has covered the entire area, reaching every household, the people here still have the habit of equipping additional items containing rainwater such as rollers, filters, and plastic tanks. Ensure enough water for use in case the clean water supply system has a problem," Ms. Bang added.
Talking to Lao Dong, Mr. Pham Thanh Toan - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Cau Ke district - said that the number of households using clean water is 27,119/30,921 households, reaching 87.70%, the household share of households using hygienic water is 100%.
According to Mr. Toan, the District Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue directs communes and towns to dredge the canals in the fields. The purpose of this is to serve irrigation and store fresh water during the dry season.

Currently, many households have equipped additional rainwater containers such as rollers, mers, and plastic tanks placed in the porch. Using rollers, fillers, and plastic tanks to store rainwater is a traditional method but brings high efficiency, especially in the dry months.
In the face of increasingly complicated heat, drought and salinity intrusion, in 2024, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Department of Agriculture and Environment) coordinated with relevant agencies to donate 36 water tanks to households affected by drought and salinity intrusion.
"The Department of Agriculture and Environment continues to mobilize and encourage people to equip themselves with additional rollers and buckets to proactively ensure domestic water sources," Mr. Toan added.
