Businesses, farmers... respond to digital transformation
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province has issued a plan for Digital Transformation of the Agriculture and Rural Development sector for the period 2023 - 2025, with a vision to 2030. From 2022 to present, the Quang Ngai agricultural sector has really engaged in digital transformation. The province's digital agricultural picture has been developing clearly.
Quang Ngai currently has more than 7,000 hectares of rice and vegetables that are automatically irrigated by businesses, cooperatives and farmers, and has established 13 domestic growing area codes. Many agricultural products are certified with VietGAP, GlobalGAP and OCOP, of which 130 OCOP products are sold on e-commerce platforms.
For example, in Son Cao commune, Son Ha district, the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has cooperated with enterprises to apply digital technology to plant 10,000 grapefruit and guava trees. The semi-automatic water-saving irrigation system has helped farmers take the initiative in water sources, gradually changing old farming practices with new production methods.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Dinh Van Tho - Director of Cao Linh Giang Agricultural Service Cooperative, Son Ha district said that because of lack of investment in irrigation system, people used to mainly grow acacia and cassava. However, when investing in automatic irrigation system, people proactively diversified their crops, growing many kinds of fruit trees with high economic value such as grapefruit, guava, etc.
Digitalizing agriculture is an inevitable direction
According to Mr. Ho Trong Phuong - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the digital transformation work, especially the development of the digital economy in agriculture in Quang Ngai, is still limited in terms of technological infrastructure, causing difficulties in accessing and applying digital technology in agricultural production. In addition, there is a shortage of human resources with expertise in information technology in the agricultural sector, especially in rural areas.
Digital transformation in agriculture is an inevitable trend. Quang Ngai identifies digital transformation in the agricultural sector as one of the necessary contents in the current period. The goal by 2025 is to have 100% of OCOP products supported, introduced, promoted and consumed on e-commerce platforms and 50% of OCOP products digitized. In 2024, the total production value of the industry is estimated to reach more than 19,568 billion VND.
However, along with the trend of economic restructuring and the need to increase productivity and improve production efficiency, digitalizing agriculture has become an inevitable direction to develop the province's agriculture more sustainably, while minimizing dependence on manual labor and optimizing natural resources.
According to Dr. Pham Hoai Nam - Chairman of the Provincial Economic Science Association, the market demand for agricultural products is very large, to seize the opportunity, there must be standards for agricultural products for export... Enterprises in the province need to improve their capacity and research the market. Agricultural products must meet new technical standards, ensuring export to higher, better and further markets.
According to Mr. Ho Trong Phuong - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Ngai province, in the smart production playground, it is now necessary to be open, transparent, and have live data for consumers to see and trust. Thereby, helping to improve agricultural productivity, optimize production, protect the environment, improve socio-economic life, and increase the competitiveness of Quang Ngai province's agriculture in the domestic and international markets.
