According to the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue and Civil Defense of Kien Giang province, since the beginning of 2024, U Minh Thuong district has recorded 454 landslides and cracks on rural roads and provincial road DT 965 passing through Minh Thuan and An Minh Bac communes. The total length of the sections is more than 11km, with estimated damage of over 200 billion VND; in addition, 42 houses were damaged due to land subsidence, with estimated damage of over 5 billion VND.
The People's Committee of Kien Giang province has allocated over 3.4 billion VND (from the provincial natural disaster prevention and control fund) to U Minh Thuong district to support people in overcoming the consequences of landslides. The provincial Department of Transport has coordinated with local authorities to divert traffic and temporarily repair landslide sites, opening roads to facilitate people's travel.
Currently, there is less than 1 month left until the Lunar New Year 2025, local people are looking forward to the repair being completed soon for convenient travel, trading and many other activities.
Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Standing member of the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue and Civil Defense of Kien Giang Province, Le Huu Toan, said: In recent times, especially in the dry season of 2024, the severe heat and drought have caused the water level on the canals in the buffer zone of U Minh Thuong National Park to drop very low, causing many roads to collapse and collapse. Implementing the direction of the Provincial People's Committee, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has coordinated with relevant departments, branches and sectors to study urgent solutions to overcome the above situation.
Up to now, the project to prevent flooding and drought in the U Minh Thuong buffer zone of Kien Giang province has been completed. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has reported to the Provincial People's Committee and proposed a budget of about 57 billion VND to implement the project, including: Investing in the construction of Tau Luy canal culvert; Investing in the construction of Canal 9 culvert; Investing in the construction of 8 pumping stations and other auxiliary items. The expected implementation period is 2024 - 2025.
Mr. Toan also informed that the Department of Transport has completed the selection of contractors and is implementing repairs and overcoming landslides and high-risk landslides on provincial road DT 965. According to the direction of the Provincial People's Committee, the total length to be repaired is 2km, the total cost is 39 billion VND; expected to open to traffic before Tet and complete in the first quarter of 2025.
