As reported by Lao Dong, from June 20 to 30, Thai Nguyen province experienced many heavy rains, causing local flooding. At one point, the province recorded 130 deeply flooded spots, 33 in the central area.
The flooded black spots include Minh Cau, Hoang Gia streets, San Nen intersection, Quang Vinh, Thai Nguyen University area, Hoang Van Thu, Luong Ngoc Quyen...
These are all arterial roads with heavy traffic volume. Prolonged rain caused flooding from 40 to 60cm, it took hours for the water to recede.

The cause of the flooding comes from an old drainage system, built decades ago. Many streets have small, degraded sewers, which cannot meet the needs of prolonged heavy rain.
At the same time, the rapid urbanization has caused ponds, low-lying fields, and the area of natural water seepage to increasingly narrow.
In the case of rainfall below 90mm/hour, the system still operates effectively, only stagnating locally in a few low-lying areas. When there is heavy rain from 100mm, the system is quickly overloaded, causing flooding lasting from 2 to 3 hours in many areas.
Faced with the above situation, the authorities have proposed solutions to prevent and combat local flooding in the central area of the province, in Phan Dinh Phung ward (this is the central ward when merging 7 wards of the old Thai Nguyen city).

Accordingly, rainwater is currently mainly drained through 3 basins of Xuong Rong - Dong Danh, Mo Bach - Hoang Gia and Cong Ngua.
Most flooded areas in the central area have a low altitude of less than 26.5m, with poor self- movements. The connection of drainage systems between residential areas is not synchronous.
Through the survey, the solution was proposed as the priority of building the right dike of Cau River (from Ben Oanh suspension bridge to the foot of Nui Tien, Gia Sang ward). Renovate the Huong Waterfall overflow to control the water level elevation on the Cau River. Renovate Xuong Rong - Dong Danh stream from Bong Toi bridge to Cau river, combine hard embankments on both sides, dredge the stream bed, adjust the height of the stream bottom.
At the same time, the SP9 - Nui Tien Forced Pumping Station will be built with a designed capacity of 22m3/s, including 10 generators. Dredging, replacing sewers with large diameters and lowering elevations, adding box sewers. Renovate and expand intake and drainage gates to improve drainage capacity.

This proposed plan has a total investment of about 588 billion VND (from the provincial budget, ward budget and other legal capital sources).
Flood prevention plans are being studied. In the immediate future, the People's Committee of Thai Nguyen province will immediately establish a working group to monitor and have a flood treatment plan. The provincial leaders assigned specialized agencies with appropriate functions to propose investment policies to implement local flood prevention and control projects in the central area of the province.
