At noon on September 8, a section of the Lang Son Citadel historical site, at the south gate, collapsed. In addition, a barrier restricting the height of vehicles passing through the citadel also collapsed. The location of the citadel's landslide was triangular. The longest section of the landslide was about 4 meters long. After the incident, authorities were present to direct traffic and prevent vehicles from passing through the citadel gate to avoid danger.
According to information from the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lang Son province, in the coming time, the unit will inspect and repair the collapsed part of the citadel gate.
According to research, the exact time of construction of Lang Son Citadel is not yet determined, only known that it was renovated in the 26th year of Hong Duc of the Le Dynasty (1495). The next repairs were in 1756-1758 of the Canh Hung Dynasty, in 1837 of the Nguyen Dynasty, in 2001 the southern arch gate was renovated and a protective stele was installed, and in 2005-2006 it was again extensively renovated.
The ancient citadel is rectangular, with 4 gates facing East, West, South, North and 19 guard points. Today, only 2 fairly intact gates remain, the South and West, along with some sections of the citadel. The perimeter of the citadel is about one kilometer, with four sides all wide and flat, very convenient for launching attacks and rescuing when necessary. This is a favorable military position with advantages in both attack and defense.
Lang Son Citadel was ranked at the national level in 1999. This is a historical relic that played an important role in the fight against foreign invaders in Lang Son, and is a solid, large-scale military architectural work of the feudal dynasties of Vietnam.
