The Smart Traffic Control Center of Hanoi City Police is built with modern technical infrastructure, synchronously integrating a system of 1,837 cameras of all kinds with subsystems to monitor, operate and handle violations of traffic order and safety.
The highlight of the system is the application of AI in traffic light control according to the principle of automation and flexibility, based directly on actual vehicle traffic volume at each intersection, each time of day, replacing the previous fixed cycle operation method. Thanks to that, the ability to pass through intersections has been significantly improved.
The results of the assessment of the Traffic Police Department (CSGT) - Hanoi City Police at many key routes and intersections show that 100% of intersections applying AI traffic light control have recorded increased traffic volume compared to before the deployment. The improvement level is assessed to range from about 4% to over 18%, depending on the characteristics of each intersection and vehicle traffic volume. Many intersections with high traffic density recorded an increase of over 10%, such as Nguyen Thai Hoc - Ton Duc Thang, Giai Phong - Truong Chinh, contributing to reducing local congestion during peak hours.
The practical experience of Lao Dong newspaper reporters on Hue street during rush hour in the afternoon, only 1 green light can pass through all 8 intersections without having to stop.
In parallel with the operation, the AI camera system continues to play an important role in monitoring, detecting and handling violations of traffic order and safety. In the first 7 days of operation, the system has automatically detected 1,020 violations, mainly not obeying traffic lights (626 cases), not wearing helmets (361 cases), along with some acts of stopping, parking, and picking up and dropping off passengers in violation of regulations.
The entire process of detecting, extracting images and handling violations is carried out in an electronic environment, ensuring objectivity and transparency.
"Since the AI camera system was put into operation, the on-duty pressure at our intersections has decreased significantly. The system helps detect early incidents of collisions or vehicles in distress so that authorities can be present in time. In particular, people's awareness has been significantly raised, the situation of encroaching on lanes and running red lights has decreased significantly" - Captain Trinh Quoc Tuan - officer of Road Traffic Police Team No. 7, Hanoi Traffic Police Department shared.
From initial results, it can be seen that the application of AI in traffic management is an important step, creating a foundation for Hanoi to gradually build a smart, modern transportation system, better serving the daily travel needs of the people.
