Landslides and tornadoes occur in many places
From the beginning of 2026 to now, natural disasters caused damage in Ca Mau estimated at 29.37 billion VND. The whole province has experienced 91 landslides with a total length of about 2,471m, affecting 84 houses, works and production areas.
At the same time, 59 tornadoes occurred, injuring 8 people, affecting 412 houses. Among them, 70 houses collapsed and were heavily damaged; 342 houses had their roofs blown off and were slightly damaged. A fishing boat also sank due to natural disasters.
According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung - Head of the Irrigation Sub-Department, Chief of Office of the Civil Defense Command of Ca Mau province, the locality is one of the places heavily affected by climate change. Drought, subsidence, coastal erosion, riverbank erosion, and flooding are becoming increasingly complicated, greatly affecting people's lives and socio-economic development.

In Ganh Hao commune, the risk of natural disasters is clearly present when the locality has about 9km of coastline, dense river and canal system. Population is concentrated in riverside and coastal areas, while exploitation and aquaculture activities are developing.
Ms. Nguyen Kim Dung - Vice Chairwoman of Ganh Hao Commune People's Committee - said that in the first 6 months of 2026, storms and tornadoes caused 4 houses to have their roofs blown off, causing damage of about 83 million VND. The locality must also regularly proactively respond to heavy rain, high tides, tropical depressions, storms, landslides, subsidence and flooding.

Ca Mau has developed a 2026 disaster prevention and control plan, reviewed response plans according to each type and level of risk. Key and critical areas have been strengthened for inspection; warning and propaganda to people have been promoted. On-duty regime and 112 switchboard have been maintained, along with the application of information technology in direction and administration.
However, the ability to respond still has weaknesses. Specialized vehicles serving rescue and relief, especially at sea, in riverside and coastal areas, are still lacking and not synchronized. Some households still live in temporary and semi-permanent houses.
Notably, transportation for evacuation has not met the requirements. Some roads to small hamlets, with narrow road surfaces, are difficult to serve the relocation of people by heavy-duty vehicles. Currently, the commune only has one road that basically meets the evacuation requirements with a large number of people.
Ready to respond to natural disaster incidents
From the above limitations, Ganh Hao Commune People's Committee proposed to support investment in 1 to 3 key traffic routes with large tonnage, both serving to relocate people and creating conditions for rescue vehicles to access quickly when incidents occur.
Vice Chairman of Ca Mau Provincial People's Committee Ngo Vu Thang proposed that the National Steering Committee for Civil Defense pay attention to supporting specialized vehicles to serve incident response at sea, riverside areas, coastal areas and areas frequently experiencing landslides and subsidence.
Ca Mau also proposed that the Central Government complete regulations and guidelines on assessing and classifying risk levels for some specific types of natural disasters in the Mekong Delta.
According to Mr. Ngo Vu Thang, with the characteristic of 3 sides bordering the sea, Ca Mau regularly faces many types of complex natural disasters, with increasing frequency and severity. Therefore, the province hopes that the proposals and recommendations of the locality will continue to be concerned and supported in solving.

Major General Pham Hai Chau - Deputy Chief of Office of the National Civil Defense Steering Committee, Deputy Director of the Department of Rescue and Relief (General Staff) highly appreciated the proactiveness of the government and people of Ca Mau in responding to natural disasters. He requested the locality to continue to review and update plans to be close to the actual situation, strengthen propaganda to raise people's awareness, and ensure that forces and vehicles are always ready.
Faced with increasingly unpredictable natural disaster developments, the requirement for Ca Mau is to strongly shift from response to proactive prevention, from early warning to preparing forces and means to invest in rescue works, in order to limit damage to people and property.
