Ho Chi Minh City agreed to expand Nguyen Tat Thanh Street from 4 to 6 - 8 lanes and build a new Tan Thuan 1 Bridge to relieve congestion at the southern gateway to the center.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just issued a document agreeing on the investment research policy for the project to upgrade and expand Nguyen Tat Thanh Street and build a bridge to replace Tan Thuan 1 Bridge according to the proposal of the Department of Construction.

According to the directive document, the City People's Committee assigned the Department of Planning and Architecture to preside over the organization of a competition for architectural plans for the area of the West bank of the Saigon River, from Ba Son Bridge to Vietnam International Container Port. At the same time, relevant units must review, update and propose local adjustments to planning projects to ensure consistency in urban space development.

The Department of Construction is assigned to preside over the investment research of the entire project, coordinating with the Department of Planning and Architecture, the Department of Finance, the Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Traffic Works and related agencies.

The city requires the preparation process to fully comply with legal regulations, ensure investment progress and efficiency and consider applying the public-private partnership (PPP) method for appropriate items.

Along with that, the Department of Construction will guide the Project Management Board to carry out investment preparation procedures; coordinate consultation to review planning, survey and evaluate traffic volume. This result will be the basis for proposing the scale of the route in accordance with the current status and long-term development orientation.

The Department of Finance takes on the role of advising and arranging capital for the investment preparation phase.

As a route connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City with the South (formerly District 7 and Nha Be District), Nguyen Tat Thanh Street is only 8 - 14 m wide with 4 lanes, often congested, especially during rush hour.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, the traffic volume on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street is currently exceeding the designed capacity by 140%, making it the most congested place in the city.

Tan Thuan 1 Bridge has been in use since 1905, is 120 years old, no longer meets load standards and poses a potential risk to traffic safety.

According to the proposal of the Department of Construction, Nguyen Tat Thanh Street from Khanh Hoi Bridge to Tan Thuan Bridge will be expanded to 30 - 40 m, with 6 - 8 lanes.

The new Tan Thuan 1 Bridge will be designed modernly, ensuring load capacity, clearance of boat clearance and suitability for the urban landscape along the river.

The Department of Construction also proposed to build a minimum of 4-lane Hoang Dieu underpass to separate traffic flows and reduce conflicts.

The total estimated investment is about VND2,950 billion. Ho Chi Minh City aims to complete investment preparation and site clearance in 2026 and implement construction in the 2027 - 2029 period.
