Progress of 4-lane overpass to remove bottlenecks at the Northwest gateway of Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City - Nga Tu Dinh overpass on National Highway 1 is accelerating construction, expected to open branch N1 on September 2nd, contributing to reducing traffic congestion at the Northwest gateway of Ho Chi Minh City.

On August 1, recorded at the Nga Tu Dinh intersection project construction site on National Highway 1 (Tan Thoi Hiep ward and Dong Hung Thuan ward), the construction atmosphere was urgent on the N1 bridge branch (direction from Thu Duc to An Suong).

Dozens of engineers and workers along with many mechanical equipment were mobilized and deployed simultaneously in many construction fronts.

The Nga Tu Dinh intersection project was started in August 2025 with a total investment of nearly 400 billion VND.

The project includes a reinforced concrete overpass along National Highway 1, more than 430 m long, 17.5 m wide with 4 lanes for two-way traffic. The project also builds a system of service roads on both sides and renovates branch roads to complete traffic organization in the area.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board (Management Board - Investor), the construction progress of the N1 bridge branch is currently about 60%.

To date, all 30 drilled piles and 7/7 abutments and bridge piers have been completed. The construction unit has also cast 24/24 girder slabs, while the bridge deck has completed 2/5 spans.

For the road section, the pressure pile item has been completed, and the road embankment work at the bridgehead is being prepared for implementation. Construction units are focusing on installing the remaining girders and completing the upper structure to ensure progress.

According to the plan, the N1 bridge branch will be completed and put into operation in early September 2026. The N2 bridge branch (direction from An Suong to Thu Duc) and other items of the project are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.

According to the Management Board, the project implementation faces many difficulties because the project is located on National Highway 1 - the traffic route with the largest traffic volume in Ho Chi Minh City, while the cross-section of the route is only about 28 - 32 m wide.

The ground for construction is only about 11 m, causing many obstacles in organizing many construction fronts at the same time.

In addition, the movement of machinery between positions must always be carried out in conditions of dense traffic.

For elevated items such as girder installation or concrete pouring, the construction unit must implement according to the approved traffic organization plan, and at the same time coordinate to regulate vehicles to minimize congestion on National Highway 1.

To ensure traffic throughout the construction process, the Traffic Management Board regularly coordinates with An Suong Traffic Police Team, local police and traffic management units to monitor traffic flow, promptly adjust traffic diversion plans, ensure safety and minimize impact on people's travel.

Nga Tu Dinh is the intersection between National Highway 1 - the artery connecting Ho Chi Minh City with the Mekong Delta and Southeast provinces - and Nguyen Van Qua street, one of the important traffic axes of the Northwest area of the city.

For many years, this area has often experienced congestion, especially during peak hours when a large number of trucks, passenger cars, containers and personal vehicles poured in from many directions.

When completed, the Nga Tu Dinh overpass is expected to eliminate one of the serious congestion points on National Highway 1, shorten traffic time, improve the exploitation capacity of the route and create favorable conditions for goods transportation as well as people's travel from the Northwest gateway to the center of Ho Chi Minh City and vice versa.
