In recent years, rain and floods have caused the Cau River water to rise, causing damage to many areas in Thai Nguyen.
In early October 2025, Typhoon Matmo caused widespread heavy rain, many streets in the central area of Thai Nguyen were deeply flooded, traffic was cut off and caused much damage.
Previously, Typhoon Yagi in October 2024 also made the Cau River water level rise. Many riverside residential areas were submerged in floodwaters, and people's lives and production were disrupted.

Faced with the above situation, Thai Nguyen has implemented many plans to respond and minimize flooding for the central area. Among them, the project to build the Huu Cau dike section from Cao Ngan bridge to Thac Huong dam brings many expectations.
According to the plan, the dyke line is more than 16.4km long, passing through Phan Dinh Phung, Quan Trieu and Gia Sang wards. The project has a total investment of nearly 2,240 billion VND, compensation and site clearance work of more than 3,386 billion VND.
In addition to the flood prevention function for the central area, the project is also designed to combine urban traffic with many sections of the dyke surface from 14 - 24m wide to meet the standards of regional-level urban roads.
The project also deploys drainage culvert systems, riverbank protection embankments, lighting, synchronous technical infrastructure and auxiliary items.
To implement the project, the total land area to be recovered is about 113.7ha, affecting more than 2,300 households and 42 organizations, of which it is expected that over 740 households will have to be resettled.

In Quan Trieu ward, where more than 1,000 households are affected, local authorities are synchronously deploying propaganda, disseminating mechanisms and policies and organizing inventory of land and assets.
In Gia Sang ward, more than 140 households have been counted for residential land and agricultural land. Meanwhile, in Phan Dinh Phung ward, many households have received compensation money and handed over land.
Mr. Nguyen Gia Long (Phan Dinh Phung ward) said: "Local people are very much looking forward to the Huu Cau dike project. When the dike is completed, it will contribute to ensuring safety for people every time floods occur.
In recent years, every time there are rains and floods, people are very worried. I really look forward to the project being implemented.
Information from Mr. Dang Xuan Liem - Deputy Director of the Land Fund Development Center Region I, the workload of the project is very large due to the involvement of many households and organizations in the area.
Professional units are focusing on reviewing dossiers, speeding up inventory, developing compensation plans and strengthening dialogue to create consensus among the people.
It is expected that in June 2026, the Huu Cau dyke line will be started and constructed from Gia Bay bridge to Ben Oanh bridge.

According to Mr. Tran Dai Nghia - Head of Site Clearance and Construction Investment Consulting Department (Provincial Traffic and Agricultural Construction Investment Project Management Board), the unit is closely coordinating with departments, branches and localities to complete the necessary procedures.
The Project Management Board determined that it must fully ensure the legitimate and lawful rights of the people, and strive to start construction in June 2026.
When completed, the dyke line is expected to improve flood prevention capacity, minimize damage caused by flooding to the central area. At the same time, it creates motivation to complete the technical infrastructure system, connect traffic and embellish urban space along the Cau River.
