On December 28, information from Thanh Hoa Provincial Police said that Xuan Thai Commune Police had mobilized Mr. Le Van Doan (residing in Yen Vinh village, Xuan Thai commune) to voluntarily hand over 2 monkeys being illegally kept.

The two individuals of monkeys handed over include 1 mocking monkey (scientific name Macaca assamensis) and 1 long-tailed monkey (scientific name Macaca fascicularis). These are both forest animals belonging to group IIB - endangered and rare species that need to be protected according to the provisions of Decree No. 84/2021/ND-CP dated September 22, 2021 of the Government.
After being propagated and explained by the Commune Police force about the provisions of law as well as the meaning of wildlife rescue and conservation work, Mr. Le Van Doan clearly recognized his personal responsibility to the community and the ecological environment, and voluntarily handed over all the animals being kept.
Immediately after receiving them, Xuan Thai Commune Police coordinated with Xuan Thai Forest Protection Station of Ben En National Park to hand over 2 monkeys to the Ben En National Park Wildlife Rescue Center for care and nurturing according to professional procedures.
According to functional agencies, mocking monkeys are primates that mainly live in mountainous areas of South Asia and Southeast Asia, have a habit of living in herds, foraging during the day and are heavily dependent on the natural forest environment. Meanwhile, long-tailed monkeys (also known as crab-eating monkeys) originate from Southeast Asia, live according to matriarchal social structures, have high adaptability but are facing the risk of habitat degradation due to overlapping living environments with humans.
