Not meeting requirements
According to statistics from the Hanoi City Traffic Management and Operation Center, the bus infrastructure system in the city has over 4,800 stops, 350 waiting rooms, 5 transit points, and 127 starting points.
According to Director of the Hanoi City Traffic Management and Operation Center (Hanoi Department of Construction) Thai Ho Phuong, the coverage and connectivity of the bus infrastructure system is quite good, suitable for the general infrastructure conditions and traffic organization of the city. However, the system has some shortcomings.
The stops have not been encrypted for management and convenient for people to look up. The design and size of the shelter, stops have not been designed synchronously and does not create the image and symbol for the capital. The number of stops with a waiting house accounts for a low ratio (8%), of which suburban areas are almost no waiting houses. Of the total 127 terminals across the network, 65 points are temporarily arranged at the heart, roadside or airstrikes ... unstable and may have to move and adjust when required.
In addition, the land fund for building terminals, transit points, priority lanes, and private lanes is still lacking, so bus operations are still difficult (currently the whole city only has 12.9km of private lanes for buses). Many stops, waiting rooms are occupied, personal vehicles are parked on the road, and the sidewalk next to the waiting room, causing difficulties for buses when entering and leaving the pick-up and drop-off point.
People's access to buses is also very limited. According to the survey results, nearly 40% of passengers have to walk over 500m to get to the bus stop. Urban areas have not paid attention to the issue of arranging infrastructure for public passenger transport, so the opening of new bus routes to urban areas is facing many difficulties...
Hanoi City has invested in opening many new bus routes, widely connecting to suburban areas. along with that are policies to exempt and reduce ticket prices for priority subjects. It can be affirmed that Hanoi's bus service is leading the country. However, to increasingly attract people to use the service, the city needs to pay more attention to investing in infrastructure renovation, especially investing in stops with waiting rooms so that passengers can easily access and use the service" - Mr. Pham Khanh (Mac Thi Buoi Street, Hai Ba Trung District) - suggested.
Increasing investment, improving infrastructure
In Decision No. 2066/QD-UBND (dated April 16, 2025) of the Hanoi People's Committee approving the "Project to evaluate the overall bus network as a basis for proposing solutions to adjust and improve the quality of services and public passenger transport output in the city", infrastructure renovation is one of the groups of solutions that receive special attention.
For bus stops: The city will review and re-reasonabilize all stops in terms of distance, location suitability for passengers to easily access and ensure connectivity of the network (average distance of 500m in the inner city and 800m in the suburbs).
The Department of Construction plans to increase the total number of stops to about 6,500 points, an increase of 65-70% compared to the current number of points; Rearrange stops close to residential areas suitable for infrastructure, close to urban railway stations, private vehicle parking points and conveniently connect with other types of transport (taxis, public bicycles...), ensuring a transit distance between types under 300m (trance travel time under 5 minutes).
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hai - Vice Chairman of the Hanoi City Public Passenger Transport Association - said: "We hope that the people of the capital will open their hearts to receive buses. Especially for those who have never used a bus, try experiencing it a few times and compare it with using a private vehicle, thereby deciding whether to choose a regular bus or not. I think this is also a beautiful act, showing love for the capital.
