Ms. Lan - a street vendor on Pham Ngu Lao Street - expressed her joy at the news that more sidewalks are being rented out for business. "I have been selling here for more than 2 years now. Every time the authorities come to check, I have to worry about cleaning up my goods, otherwise my goods will be confiscated and I will be fined. If the sidewalks on this street are rented out, I will ask the landlord here to register so that I can do business with peace of mind, avoiding the situation where every time I display my goods, I have to look around," Ms. Lan said.
Previously, in May 2024, District 1 piloted sidewalk rental on 11 streets, including Hoang Sa (Tan Dinh ward), Mac Dinh Chi (Da Kao ward), Hai Trieu and Chu Manh Trinh (Ben Nghe ward), Le Thanh Ton, Phan Boi Chau, Phan Chu Trinh (Ben Thanh ward), Ham Nghi (Nguyen Thai Binh ward), Tran Hung Dao (Pham Ngu Lao, Nguyen Cu Trinh, Cau Ong Lanh, Cau Kho wards), Co Bac (Cau Ong Lanh ward) and Vo Van Kiet (Co Giang ward).
Up to now, the sidewalks on the above routes have become clear, people and tourists can move freely, the encroachment by street stalls or vehicles has significantly reduced.
District 1 People's Committee said that, to date, 374 cases of registration for sidewalk use for business have been recorded, of which Ben Thanh Ward has the highest number of registrations with 179 cases. The total fee collected from temporary sidewalk use reached more than 810 million VND.
District 1 People's Committee assessed that the sidewalk fee pilot has contributed to improving urban order, creating a neater landscape and ensuring safe and clear walkways for pedestrians without affecting general traffic.
