Quang Ngai - Ngoc Hoi waste treatment area was affected by an incident, water and waste spilled out, causing pollution, affecting fish ponds, crops and the lives of people around.

On July 31, Mr. Le The Ha - Director of the Project Management and Public Service Department of Bo Y commune, Quang Ngai province (formerly Ngoc Hoi district, Kon Tum province) said that there was a report on the incident at the Ngoc Hoi solid waste treatment complex in Bo Y commune. Specifically, water and waste have overflowed, affecting people.

According to the report, at the landfill of Ngoc Hoi solid waste treatment area, a large hole appeared, estimated at 2m in diameter, more than 10m long, through the body of the trash bag.

Since then, thousands of blocks of water and waste in the landfill have been washed away, causing serious environmental incidents. A large amount of water and waste flowed down, filling fish ponds and crops of households, affecting the surrounding environment.

The washing of water and mixed waste also caused the operating house and 2 wastewater treatment ponds (belonging to Ngoc Hoi solid waste treatment complex) to be filled.

According to the Project Management Board and Public Services of Bo Y commune, due to the impact of heavy rain lasting from April 2025 to present, the amount of water accumulated in the landfill has increased. Therefore, high water pressure damages the connection of the wastewater collection pipe of the system, causing water to overflow.

This large amount of water has swept away a part of untreated waste, overflowing from the garbage collection area, affecting the ponds of surrounding households.

After the incident, the unit urgently organized the collection and cleaning of all the waste spilled into the environment. At the same time, reinforce the stone cages to cover and isolate the incident area to minimize the discharge of waste and leachate into the environment.

The Project Management Board and Public Services of Bo Y commune have sent an official dispatch to the construction unit, requesting a plan to fix and repair the broken culvert connection, ensuring that water and garbage do not continue to overflow.

In order to ensure environmental sanitation and stabilize the lives of people in the affected area, the Management Board has directed functional agencies and units to coordinate to support handling and overcoming the incident.

This includes the work of collecting and cleaning up garbage spilled outside the treatment area; sending forces to monitor and coordinate the handling of situations related to affected people; ensuring security and order in the area during the incident handling period.

The Ngoc Hoi solid waste treatment joint venture project was approved in principle by the Kon Tum Provincial People's Committee (formerly) in Decision No. 504/QD-UBND dated June 9, 2017. The project will be accepted and put into operation from April 2025. However, after just over 3 months of operation, the project had problems.
