Passengers benefit from digital technology
With the successful operation of the automatic ticket checking system on two urban railway lines, representatives of state management agencies assessed that this is a solid foundation for deploying an interconnected electronic ticket system throughout the public passenger transport network, gradually realizing the goal of building Hanoi into a modern and sustainable city.
Mr. Le Bang An - General Director of Hanoi Railway One Member Limited Liability Company (Hanoi Metro) - said that after more than 8 months of implementation, more than 5.7 million passengers have used the new ticket gate system on the two routes Nhon - Hanoi Station and Cat Linh - Ha Dong. 100% of ticket gates have been upgraded; the rate of using electronic identification, authentication and biometric recognition applications reached 85%; revenue of the two routes increased by 48% and passenger volume increased by 15% compared to the same period.
Passengers also experience modern and more convenient train travel thanks to a variety of non-cash payment methods such as chip-based citizen identification cards, NFC, QR, Hanoi Metro application, Tap & Go... helping to reduce waiting time and easily track transaction history. The application of biometric authentication ensures data security, limits the risk of card loss, fraud or information leakage.
In particular, passengers can use VNeID to register for services without creating a private account and in the future can book interconnected routes on a single platform at optimal cost. Policy beneficiaries are also applied with automatic, fast and transparent ticket exemptions and discounts, bringing convenience and fairness in accessing services.
Mr. An said that the application of electronic identification and biometrics in public transport helps Hanoi develop smart transportation, improve management, and at the same time bring a convenient train travel experience with many forms of cashless payment.
Assessing after nearly 8 months of implementation, Colonel Tran Hong Phu - Deputy Director of the Department of Administrative Management of Social Order (Ministry of Public Security) - said that this is not just a technical solution but a fundamental shift, proving the change in awareness and behavior in the digital society.
Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Danh Huy praised the implementing units for localizing the entire system, meeting international standards and having the ability to participate in other major Metro projects in the world. He emphasized that the greatest value is passenger satisfaction when enjoying the actual benefits from digital technology.
Need to deploy and expand inter-agency tickets
In the coming period, Hanoi Metro will expand infrastructure and standardize techniques for new routes, aiming to unify a common electronic ticket card system for all urban railway routes in Hanoi; upgrade software, integrate payment and deploy continuous traffic solutions.
It is expected that in the second quarter of 2026, Hanoi will pilot a model of interconnection between urban railways and national railways at Hanoi Station, while connecting with BRT buses, taxis, and technology motorbike taxis (Grab, GSM, Be Group), creating a smart and seamless transportation network" - Mr. Le Bang An revealed.
Colonel Tran Hong Phu proposed to replicate the solution to the entire transportation system, from urban railways, buses to aviation, inter-provincial transport and parking lots, in order to eliminate data fragmentation; closely coordinate with the Ministry of Public Security to complete the continuous transportation solution, integrating utilities on the VNeID application.
When taking people as the center, taking convenience and safety as a measure, technology will become a driving force to create new values, contributing to building a civilized, modern and pioneering Capital in national digital transformation" - Colonel Tran Hong Phu said.
Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Danh Huy hopes Hanoi will soon achieve the goals of major cities in the world (such as London, England), where people only need one card/only method to travel all types of vehicles. He also proposed that Hanoi and related units coordinate to develop common standards for the electronic ticket system to ensure synchronization nationwide.
