Electric vehicle collects garbage, reducing hardship for workers

3-wheeled electric vehicles being put into pilot operation in garbage collection in some areas of Hoan Kiem ward (Hanoi) are contributing to reducing pressure on environmental workers.

According to Ms. Vu Thi Hoi (Hoan Kiem ward, Hanoi), in the past, garbage was often collected on strollers placed on the street, causing odors and affecting environmental sanitation. Since the area piloted 3-wheeled electric vehicle collection of garbage in the evening, the living environment has had many positive changes.

My area is near the market, so the amount of garbage is quite large. Previously, many people littered garbage not on time, not in the prescribed places, so it was very unsanitary. Now, every time it's almost collection time, I prepare a garbage bag, when I hear the loudspeaker and music of the 3-wheeled electric vehicle, I take the garbage out to dispose of it, the collection vehicle finishes and I leave immediately, very convenient and civilized" - Ms. Hoi shared.

According to Ms. Ninh Thi Loan - Head of Environmental Sanitation Team No. 1 (Hanoi Urban Environment Co., Ltd. - Hoan Kiem branch), during the day the unit uses 2-wheeled electric vehicles to collect garbage, and at night uses 3-wheeled electric vehicles. On weekend afternoons, garbage trucks will go to collect garbage earlier, around 5 pm, to collect garbage from people. 3-wheeled electric vehicles have music playing much more conveniently than garbage carts and gongs before.

Putting 3-wheeled electric vehicles into use not only improves the efficiency of garbage collection but also significantly reduces labor costs for environmental sanitation workers" - Ms. Loan shared.

From the beginning of June 2026, the branch has put into operation 10 3-wheeled electric vehicles and in the past week continued to add 10 more vehicles.

According to a report by Hanoi Urban Environment One Member Limited Liability Company - Hoan Kiem branch, after a pilot period from June 4 to July 4, 2026 in Hang Dao and Hang Bac residential groups (Hoan Kiem ward), 3-wheeled electric vehicles with loudspeakers emitting waste collection signals have well met the requirements of collecting and transporting domestic waste in the specific conditions of the Old Quarter area.

The model brings many positive results such as improving environmental sanitation quality; removing garbage collection points and crane points; reducing the impact on urban traffic; reducing emissions; improving urban aesthetics and in line with the orientation of implementing the Low Emission Zone of Hanoi City. In particular, direct collection by specialized electric vehicles is also in line with the city's policy of organizing garbage collection after 8 pm.

For workers, the use of specialized electric vehicles has significantly reduced the intensity of manual labor when they no longer have to push 660-liter trash cans on long distances; limit direct contact with garbage and wastewater during work; increase mobility, shorten travel time between collection points; and at the same time improve labor safety, improve working conditions and contribute to protecting the health of environmental workers.
