However, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has acknowledged the US investigation into a third party linked to the federation.
The organization issued a statement after media reports that President Claudio Tapia and treasurer Pablo Toviggino were detained at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York before boarding the flight to bring the Argentine team home, after losing 0-1 to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.
According to reports, Mr. Tapia and Toviggino were detained for questioning and their electronic devices were confiscated by the US authorities, before being summoned to court in connection with commercial contracts worth up to 300 million USD of AFA.
However, an AFA statement rejected all allegations, saying it was "completely false". The AFA admitted that a Florida district court issued a summons targeting "a third party".
The announcement said that this individual was "requested to appear before the jury and present any documents and contact information that may relate to various individuals, including officials" of the federation.
Spreading inaccurate or deliberately distorted information will cause serious information distortion and unfairly affect the honor and image of individuals and organizations," AFA said.
AFA, headed by football tycoon Tapia since 2017, is subject to several investigations in Argentina.
One investigation focuses on money laundering allegations, while another is related to tax evasion, according to AFP.
