Sky Sports reports that Thomas Tuchel is currently in talks with the FA about the England hot seat. The German tactician is currently free after leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season. Two weeks ago, Sky Sports also reported that the FA had not made any move against the 51-year-old coach.
However, with the current boring outlook of the national team, coupled with the lack of enthusiasm from interim manager Lee Carsley, the FA was forced to act immediately if they did not want things to get out of control. Until the news that Tuchel was negotiating with the FA was confirmed, the public opinion about Pep Guardiola officially disappeared.
English football officials hope that if the negotiations go smoothly, Tuchel will quickly take over the new job, possibly without waiting for Carsley to complete 6 UEFA Nations League matches. FA technical director - John McDermott said that the federation wants to pursue coaches with a long record of titles. Thomas Tuchel, with the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, Ligue-1 or Bundesliga titles, is certainly a bright name.
If appointed, Thomas Tuchel (Germany) will be the third non-British coach in the history of the "Three Lions", after Sven-Goran Eriksson (Sweden) and Fabio Capello (Italy).
There needs to be an urgent change, that is the FA's view at the moment. In the past, it cannot be denied that Gareth Southgate has had very good results in major tournaments such as reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, the finals of EURO 2020 and 2024. However, the inability to win these major tournaments, along with a bright squad, makes the FA very anxious. They are worried that when this golden generation passes, if they do not win a major title in time, it is very likely that future efforts will become meaningless.
Thomas Tuchel is at the peak of his career and has also been knowledgeable about English football during his years leading Chelsea. If appointed now, "coach Tu" will have more time to get acquainted and prepare, before the 2026 World Cup qualifiers early next year.
The FA are very anxious to find a new coach but are in no rush to negotiate with Tuchel. They understand that things are going quite well at the beginning but the further negotiations go, the more detailed and complicated things become. If Tuchel is not chosen, the FA will continue with Carsley until the end of the Nations League series in November and then decide what to do next.
