This is the first time in history that England have lost to a team from Africa.
England's only goal was scored by captain Harry Kane in the 7th minute after a close-range rebound, after Anthony Gordon failed to beat goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
This was also Kane's 73rd goal for the national team. However, what happened after that disappointed the home fans.
In the 40th minute, Ismaila Sarr equalized the score 1-1 after an accurate pass from Nicolas Jackson. In the second half, Habib Diarra and substitute Cheikh Sabaly scored in the 62nd and 90+3rd minutes, completing the impressive comeback of the team from Africa.
This result not only left England unbeaten against African teams but also marked the first time they have conceded 3 goals from an opponent from this continent.
The loss was also reminiscent of the 1-3 defeat to Brazil at home in June 1995, one of very few times England opened the scoring but lost by 2 goals.
Coach Thomas Tuchel remained calm after the match and stressed that this was just a friendly match, not worth panicking.
"We have won all three of the first matches of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, and I believe the team will continue to play well in September," the German strategist shared.
He also noted that important matches are still ahead, especially with the World Cup more than a year away.
